Founded in 1959 by Charles Von Büren, Squale is a famed name amongst the fans of professional dive instruments; the company produced its own models and made cases for numerous brands during the golden age of underwater exploration. To mark the return to these origins, last year the brand introduced the Squale 2001, a late 1960s barrel-shaped watch (first reproduced in 2024 as a limited-edition piece for the brand’s 65th anniversary), as a permanent collection model. For 2026, the new Squale SUB-37 Legend emerges, offering compact proportions, great legibility and functional integrity, with just a dash of trend-driven design.

The SUB-37 Legend is presented, as you might have guessed by the name, in a compact 37mm stainless steel case (38.5mm with the bezel), 11.2mm thick. The box-shaped sapphire crystal recreates the feel of vintage plexiglass. The fluted screw-down crown and solid screw-in caseback provide 300m water resistance. The unidirectional bezel, with a domed black insert and luminous markings at 5-minute intervals (numerals at 15, 30, and 45, and a triangle at the top), remains clean, precise, and oriented towards real-world use.

The dial is also exemplary in its disciplined design. Matte black, with indices (triangle at 12, rectangular at 3 and 9, square at 6 and circles in between) outlined in white and filled with Super-LumiNova Old Radium, and a white-printed minutes/seconds track, it clearly prioritises legibility. The sword-shaped hour and minutes hands, and the lollipop seconds hand, also receive lume treatment and provide optimal readability in low-light conditions. The vintage-toned lume references mid-century instruments, a nice touch, and the no-date option keeps the layout’s symmetry.

Inside, no surprises with a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. This alternative to the ETA 2824 is here presented in no-date configuration, operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour and has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. A pragmatic choice, aligned with the watch’s tool-watch vocation, which also allows for keeping the price in control.

The SUB-37 is worn on a Bonetto-style vulcanised rubber strap made in Italy. Its ladder construction enhances flexibility and comfort, especially in the water. Available through authorised retailers and the brand’s online store, the SUB-37 Legend is priced at EUR 1,650, CHF 1,380 or USD 1,750. For more, please visit squale.ch.
