Union Glashütte Unveils the Compact and Dressy Seris Small Second Collection

Recent releases from Union Glashütte have been largely about chronographs, from the latest Averin Chronograph with its white embossed tile-pattern dial to the Belisar Chronograph with its monochromatic look. Now, the Glashütte-based brand has something different in store with a new addition to its Seris family. Positioned as a more feminine collection, the Seris has always leaned towards smaller cases and dressier designs, with the Seris Date watches already offering a similar mix at around EUR 2,600. The concept of the new Seris Small Second is somewhat the same, but swaps the central seconds for small seconds and brings a longer power reserve. There are three versions at launch, with blue, champagne, and matte white dials.

The case measures 36mm across, with a 42.67mm lug-to-lug and a thickness of 9.88mm. Made from stainless steel, it has a nice compact profile that suits the dressier appeal of the Seris collection. The domed sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on both sides, while the screw-down sapphire caseback offers a glimpse of the movement. The water resistance of the Seris Small Second is rated at 50 metres.

The dial layout is where the new model certainly looks different from the Seris Date. Its hours and minutes show up centrally, while the small seconds display is at 6 o’clock, with the date display placed in the same area. A chrome or gold-coloured element frames the small seconds and date, depending on the version. The three dial options include a deep blue sunray finish, a champagne dial with an embossed sunburst pattern, and a matte white dial with rose-gold-coloured accents. Polished indexes also add some shine to the dial, in line with the dressy watch design.

These Seris Small Second watches are powered by the UNG-28.S1 movement, beating at 25,200 vibrations/hour. This is an evolution of the ETA 2892 with small seconds, a longer power reserve, and a silicon hairspring. The movement takes the proven 2892 platform and extends its running time to around 60 hours. Its silicon hairspring also brings better resistance to magnetism and improved long-term stability.

The three versions are paired differently. Its blue dial comes on a stainless-steel bracelet, while the champagne version gets a dark brown calfskin strap and the matte white version comes with a taupe calfskin leather strap. All use a double-folding clasp with two push-buttons. At EUR 2,350 for the blue version on its steel bracelet and EUR 2,200 for either leather-strap version, the Seris Small Second sits below the roughly EUR 2,600 price of the existing Seris Date models.
