The Panerai Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titanio PAM01784

Panerai‘s modern movement story began in 2005, when the company introduced the hand-wound P.2002, its first own calibre, combining a GMT function with an eight-day power reserve. In 2007, the brand expanded its calibre family, also introducing Panerai’s own interpretation of the tourbillon movement, the P.2005, with the tourbillon cage on an axis perpendicular to that of the balance and completing one rotation every 30 seconds. Calibre P.2005/T was launched in 2016 to become the first Panerai tourbillon calibre featuring titanium skeletonised bridges and plates. The openworked construction made the mechanics part of the visual experience, revealing the winding and unwinding of the three barrels, the interaction of the wheel train and the rotation of manufacture’s distinctive horizontal tourbillon. Since then, P.2005/T powered a few notable Panerai releases, including the currently offered Luminor Tourbillon PAM01060 in a 47mm Goldtech case, with blue-finished bridges and plates. The new PAM01784 continues the technical path the company began more than two decades ago.

The Panerai Luminor Tourbillon PAM01784 retains the 47mm case and uses Grade 5 titanium throughout its construction, with the complete watch weighing about 105 grams. The case combines brushed and polished surfaces with the signature crown-protecting bridge and a polished titanium bezel. A domed sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the display caseback, also made from Grade 5 titanium, features a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 100 metres.

Following the design introduced with earlier P.2005/T-powered references, the Luminor Tourbillon PAM01784 uses the blue-treated movement as the foundation for the dial and indication. The numerals at cardinal positions and indices are mounted directly onto the movement plate, with the gear train, barrels and rotating tourbillon visible beneath the crystal. The centrally mounted hands indicate the hours, minutes, and second time zone. The small seconds and the AM/PM indicator are located at 9 and 3 o’clock, respectively. Starting with the “Lo Scienziato” PAM00768, the power reserve is shown dial-side, to the left of the 6 o’clock index; on earlier versions of calibre P.2005/T, it was on the back. White Super-LumiNova provides white illumination for numbers, indices, hours and minutes hands, blue on GMT and AM/PM indicators, with the power reserve indicator glowing green in the dark.

The hand-wound P.2005/T is a skeletonised calibre measuring 10.05mm thick. As mentioned, its standout trait is Panerai’s patented horizontal tourbillon, whose cage completes one rotation every 30 seconds. The movement also houses three barrels connected in series, with a combined mainspring length of 1.36 metres and enough energy for a 144-hour power reserve. The calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour and contains 277 components and 31 jewels. The true GMT function lets the local hour hand jump forward or backwards in one-hour increments without disturbing the home time hand.

PAM01784 is worn on a blue alligator leather strap closed by an adjustable folding clasp in titanium; an additional blue rubber strap with a pin buckle is included with the purchase; a screwdriver, needed for changing the buckle, is also provided.
