American Indie Watchmaker RGM Releases the Perpetual Calendar Model 501-PC
Pennsylvania-based RGM returns to the QP with a classically styled watch with a Grand Feu enamel dial and a modified Swiss movement.
RGM Watch Company, the American independent watchmaker based in Pennsylvania, is bringing the perpetual calendar complication back into its collection with the new Model 501-PC, marking the company’s first watch with the function since the Model 103-R Minute Repeater Perpetual of the late 1990s – you can see this model and also the watchmaker’s complete calendars on the dedicated RGM page. For founder Roland G. Murphy, the project has long been an ambition. The 501-PC offered an opportunity to revisit the complication through the lens of the traditional American watchmaking aesthetic closely associated with RGM, with the new watch’s design taking cues from complicated pocket watches of the late 1800s.
The Model 501-PC is housed in a 39mm case made of brushed and polished 316L stainless steel, with curved lugs and a crown at 3 o’clock. At 11.5mm thick, it stays fairly compact despite accommodating an automatic movement and a perpetual calendar mechanism with the moonphase indication. The classic case, a more compact and more elegant design introduced recently, is topped with a raised, box-style sapphire crystal that adds visual depth and reinforces the historical inspiration. Another sapphire crystal is fitted to the caseback, offering a view of the movement and its decoration. Overall, the exterior is quite straightforward, allowing the traditional dial to remain the principal focus.
And the white Grand Feu-fired enamel dial is indeed distinctive. RGM draws a direct connection here with the enamel dials of historic perpetual calendar pocket watches, where the material was valued for its crisp appearance, resistance to ageing and ability to provide an exceptionally clear surface for the indications. The dial’s deep white appearance provides a strong backdrop for the blued steel hands, firmly within the vocabulary of classical watchmaking, like all the other elements. In the centre, the hour and minutes hands indicate the time, with the central seconds hand on top. On the periphery, the classic track features red Arabic numerals at 5-minute intervals, while the hour markers are Roman. The recessed date display is at 3 o’clock; the day is opposite, at 9, and the month is shown at 12.
The month display with the crosshairs is divided into 4 parts, each representing a full year, with just January, April, July and October marked by their usual abbreviations; dots represent all other months. In a leap year, all month names are rendered in red, as are the January markings in other years. A small hand indicates the current month, making one full revolution in four years. At 6 o´clock, a traditional moon phase display completes the indications. Below, the RGM logo and “perpetual” confirm the maker and functionality.
The new RGM 501-PC is powered by the ETA 2892-A2, a Swiss automatic movement, extensively modified by RGM, with a custom Dubois Dépraz perpetual calendar module. RGM has finished the movement with traditional decorative techniques. Through the sapphire caseback, the rhodium-finished calibre reveals Côtes de Genève, perlage, and blued screws. The solid-gold winding rotor bears the watchmaker’s logo and U.S. location.
The Model 501-PC represents an important return to a complication the brand has not produced for many years. It is worn on an alligator leather strap and is priced at USD 39,900. For more, visit rgmwatches.com.
