Light, Summery Colours for the Orient Star Layered Skeleton

Champagne gold or limited-edition mint green, in time for sunny days.

Founded in 1951, only one year after the creation of the Orient Watch Company and owned since 2001 by Seiko Epson, Orient Star is the higher-end collection of the Japanese watchmaker, which celebrates this year its 75th anniversary. This year, the brand expands its contemporary collection with two new colours for the Layered Skeleton model, a classic of its portfolio. Inspired by the light colours of the seaside in summer, the watch now comes with a champagne-gold option as well as an appealing limited edition in mint green.

The Orient Star Layered Skeleton takes its inspiration from business suits and features an original dial composed of two layers. The semi-skeleton opening on the dial is paisley-shaped, and the open-work design of the power reserve display also reveals the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Now, with these new colours, the brand brings sophisticated colours that they believe will make these “ideal watches to pair with summer outfits.”

As for the case, we’re looking at classic timepieces in steel with modern dimensions; 41mm in diameter, a rather significant thickness of 13.6mm and a length of 48.3mm – not the smallest of watches. The case is finished with brushed surfaces and polished accents, features a sapphire crystal on top, a see-through caseback and is comfortably water-resistant to 100m.

Inspired by the Mediterranean atmosphere, the Layered Skeleton is now available in a champagne gold-coloured dial evoking rays of coastal sunshine with a grey calf leather strap. This edition is part of the permanent collection. The second model, this time a limited edition, has a mint green dial reminiscent of a fresh breeze over the blue ocean and is paired with a 5-link steel bracelet for a more casual look. In both cases, the dial is partially opened to reveal the balance wheel and the dial features a small seconds and a power reserve indicator.

Inside the case is the in-house Calibre F6F44, an automatic movement beating at 3Hz and storing about 50 hours of energy. Its accuracy is rated at +25 seconds to -15 seconds per day, but as often, these are rather pessimistic claims. The back reveals a movement that’s entirely rhodium-plated with an openworked rotor. The Champagne version (RE-AV0B10G) is part of the permanent collection and priced at EUR 829.99, while the mint model (RE-AV0B11E) is limited to 700 pieces and priced at EUR 899.99.
