Bell & Ross Releases the New BR-03 Diver Lum Outline

Beyond its functional aspects, Bell & Ross uses luminescence as an aesthetic design element.

Bell & Ross, with its extensive range of highly graphic pilots’ watches inspired by cockpit instruments, consolidated its identity with the BR-01 and BR-03 references (and subsequent derivations). Moving from high-altitude missions to underwater adventures, in 2017, Bell & Ross adapted its archetypal “circle in a square” aesthetic to create the BR-03 Diver, a 300m water-resistant tool watch that meets ISO 6425 standards. Since dive watches must deliver impeccable legibility, luminescence has always played a starring role at Bell & Ross, culminating in the birth of the Lum series. The latest Diver to surface is the BR-03 Lum Outline, a black ceramic model with a novel use of luminescence to outline key features.

Replacing dangerous radium-based luminous paints and short-lasting tritium, Super-LumiNova (SLN) reached the watch world in 1994. Exploring the possibilities of luminescence as a functional feature and a design element, Bell & Ross toyed with SLN in its Lum series that launched with the BR 03-92 Horolum of 2017, followed by the BR 03-92 Nightlum. Pushing the envelope, the brand released the BR 03-92 Full Lum with a dial entirely coated in SLN, and the BR-X5 Green Lum, with its unprecedented luminescent case.

The new BR-03 Diver Lum Outline perpetuates the luminescent saga and uses SLN to outline certain elements of the dial. Sticking to the design upgrades introduced to the collection in 2024, the new model features updated typography, enlarged indices, redesigned hands, and straps.

The 42mm x 42mm microblasted black ceramic case with exposed screws in each corner has a thickness of 11.2mm and a screw-down crown flanked by guards to ensure the 300m depth rating. As a watch that meets ISO 6425 standards, the unidirectional black ceramic bezel is graduated for 60 minutes with minute markings for the first 15 minutes, all treated with green Super-LumiNova.

Underwater or in the dark, the watch puts on an impressive light show. Like a neon outline, SLN is used to trace the contours of the hands and indices. The matte black varnished dial features circular and bathtub-shaped hour markers, as well as skeletonised arrow hands with green luminescent profiles. Sticking to the black and green theme, the small round aperture for the date has a black background and green numerals, and the minutes track is also green.

The watch is powered by the BR-CAL.302-1 automatic, based on a Sellita SW300-1. It has 25 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and an extended power reserve of 54 hours for the hours, minutes, hacking seconds and date.

The watch is delivered with two straps: a black rubber strap and an ultra-resistant synthetic fabric strap. The BR-03 Diver Lum Outline is a limited edition of 500 pieces and retails for EUR 5,500. More information at bellross.com.

  1. The sentencing structure reads like the watch thickness is not measured at the maximum height at the top of the sapphire glass but at the lower case corner. “The 42mm x 42mm microblasted blackeramic case with exposed screws in each corner has a thickness of 11.2mm…”
