First released in 2019, Vacheron Constantin’s Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar marked a before and after in the sophisticated realm of QPs. While not the first watchmaker to feature dual frequencies, Vacheron’s Twin Beat broke new ground as the first movement allowing you to switch between the two regulating mechanisms, converting a gas guzzling complication into a “set-and-forget” masterpiece. By switching from the 5Hz Active mode to the low-frequency 1.2Hz Standby mode, the movement kept the calendar functions ticking and accurate for an impressive 65 days. Never content to rest on its laurels, Vacheron Constantin extends the Standby’s power reserve to 70 days and, in the process, embellishes the watch with more contemporary finishings.

Perpetual calendars are incredibly sophisticated creatures with an intricate mechanical memory that can display the correct day, date, month and leap year until 2100 without intervention, provided they are constantly wound. Notoriously power-hungry and fragile complications, if you forget to wind the watch, you face the laborious task of resetting the day, date, month and leap year, usually with a fiddly tool. According to Christian Selmoni, the brand’s longstanding Style and Heritage Director, this was one of the main directives guiding the development of the Twin Beat.

Two is Better than One

Developed over four years and first released in 2019, the Twin Beat system, integrated into the 3610 QP calibre, marked a new milestone in power reserve management with two independent gear trains driven by a series-connected coaxial double barrel. Equipped with two heartbeats, the watch’s Standby mode drops the heart rate from 5Hz to a turtle-like pace of 1.2Hz, allowing you to pop the watch in a safe while you go on holiday or decide not to wear it for a stretch of 65 days. Designed with maximum user friendliness in mind, the push button on the case side at 8 o’clock switches between the two modes without interrupting the energy chain.

Another common problem with QPs is the slow-dragging gears that start interlocking before midnight. If you try to manually adjust the time or date anywhere between 9 PM and 3 AM, you risk jamming and snapping the gears, leading to costly repairs. Again, the Twin Beat addresses this problem with a redesigned instantaneous calendar mechanism that snaps instantly at midnight. However, aware that the energy required to generate the instantaneous jump can drain the power reserve and affect timekeeping, Vacheron’s jumping mechanism requires only 1/4 of the energy of traditional systems.

Energy Boost

The new Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar further enhances user-friendliness by extending the power reserve in Standby mode from 65 to 70 days. To increase the power reserve, Vacheron’s watchmakers focused on the instantaneous jumping indications and developed a new double gear spring-winding mechanism. The movement utilises three specialised differentials to manage its energy: the first ensures smooth time-telling when switching between frequencies; the second channels mainspring energy to power the ultra-thin (0.015 mm) Standby balance wheel; and the third aggregates power from the dual mainspring barrels to display both power reserves on a single dial hand.

Contemporary Finishings

True to the design codes of the Traditionnelle family, the latest Twin Beat comes in a polished 42mm platinum case with a height of 12.3mm, surprisingly compact for the number of technical features packed into this watch.

Although the dial layout is identical to that of former editions, there are refinements in the finishings to give it a more contemporary flair. Divided into two zones, the top half of the dial features a slate-grey ruthenium-coated gold plate with a radiating hand-guilloché pattern. The lower sapphire section reveals the NAC galvanised mainplate with a sandblasted finish. The engraved and inked railway-style minute track, white gold baton hour markers, and central hands are the same as in the first editions, but the power reserve indicator at noon for Standby (red) and Active (black) mode, and the day and month counters at 6 o’clock, have been modified with laser-etched sapphire glass to give them a frosted appearance. Other details include the hands of the date and month sub-dials, now rhodium-plated and sandblasted, while the yellow-gold power reserve hand and frequency indicator are coated with black PVD.

Calibre 3610 QP

A testament to the technical prowess and ingenuity of Vacheron’s watchmakers, manual-winding calibre 3610, with 480 components, 64 jewels and two regulators, has a thickness of just 6mm. The bridges, decorated with dark grey NAC galvanic treatment and Côtes de Genève, are cut away to reveal the two separate balance wheels mounted side by side, with the smaller 5Hz Active balance on the left and the larger, slower 1.2Hz Standby balance on the right. You can also see the mode-switching yoke that locks one balance wheel and releases the other via the pusher. As with the two-tone aesthetic of the dial, the contrast between the fixed dark grey components and the golden moving parts adds to the spectacle.  Decorated, as you would expect, to Vacheron Constantin’s high standards, the movement is a beauty.

Instead of the more traditional grey alligator leather strap, the watch is now paired with a technical textured calfskin strap with bold red stitching that echoes the dial’s more contemporary finishings. It is attached to the wrist with a classic platinum pin buckle.
