Tudor's exploration watch with integrated bracelet is back, with a purposeful dual time function.
First presented in 2015, the Tudor Northflag (back then named the North Flag) was an important model for the brand. Not only did it bring back a 1970s style – that of the slightly controversial Ranger II, a bold exploration-inspired take on the integrated sports watch – but it mostly was Tudor’s first watch with a manufacture movement, and one that could be seen through the back. A watch that we once called “underestimated” in our review, the model, while rather appealing, was discontinued in 2021. And, surprisingly, Tudor brings it back, with a befitting dual-time function, as the new Northflag GMT.
What hasn’t changed is the whole inspiration behind the watch. The Ranger II was probably not the brand’s most successful release. Yet, it featured interesting elements: a tonneau-shaped case, a prominent bezel, an integrated metallic bracelet with large links, and a more angular design all round, including the dial. Most of the elements have made their return in the first version of the Northflag and are now back again in the new Northflag GMT.
The overall recipe for the design has been kept, yet slightly refined over the years, starting with a shaped case that still measures 40mm in diameter, but now 12.7mm in thickness (vs. 13.4mm for the 2015 model). Lug-to-lug has also been reduced from 50mm to now 48.8mm, and the watch has a more traditionally shaped screw-down crown, sapphire crystals on both sides and a comfortable 100m water-resistance. Some details have been changed, mostly for the bezel, which is fixed and now angled, and without the black contrasting ring underneath. It’s also thinner and pairs with a box-shaped sapphire crystal, giving the watch a more slender style.
Like its predecessor, the Northflag GMT comes with a high-contrast black dial with white and yellow accents, and hour markers and numerals that are made from monobloc ceramic with luminous material. The main novelty is, of course, the removal of the power reserve indicator, replaced by a more purposeful GMT indication (a true GMT, as always with Tudor) and an inner flange with a fixed 24-hour scale. There’s more sharpness overall on the dial, with a better definition of the elements and, despite having more indications than before, more clarity to the display.
Inside the case is the Master Chronometer-certified calibre MT5652-U, produced by Tudor’s partner, Kenissi. Nothing new here, as this mechanical architecture is shared with the Pelagos FXD Zulu Time, the Black Bay Pro or the Black Bay GMT. Running at 4Hz, with a 65h power reserve, this true GMT movement features a silicon hairspring and is capable of impressive precision and resistance to magnetic fields. And it’s visible under a sapphire back.
Like the previous generation, the new Tudor Northflag GMT is worn on an integrated-style steel bracelet, with H-shaped main links. Entirely brushed for a tool-like look, it is fitted with the brand’s quick-adjust T-Fit clasp.
