The Zenith Chronomaster Revival Liberty II Celebrates 250 Years of American Independence

Draped in red, white and blue, the A384 celebrates America’s independence and Zenith’s independence from old-world production methods.

In 2019, Zenith celebrated the 50th anniversary of the El Primero, the world’s first automatic chronograph movement. Zenith’s high-frequency, integrated automatic chronograph movement was fitted inside three inaugural watches, including the A384, a bold tonneau-shaped case with a two-tone dial that reflected the design language of the period. As the United States gets ready to celebrate 250 years of independence, Zenith proposes limited editions of the A384 Revival in steel or forged carbon decked out with the colours of the American flag. Above and beyond the tribute, the Chronomaster A384 Revival Liberty II also references a deeper story about innovation and independence that began after Zenith’s founder, Georges Favre-Jacot, returned from a trip to the United States.

Georges Favre-Jacot (1843-1917) was struck by the efficiency of American industrial organisation and decided to break with the traditional Swiss établissage system, where components were produced separately before final assembly. By bringing all the different crafts under one roof, Favre-Jacot adopted the more efficient American approach to manufacturing. Erected in 1865, Zenith’s manufacture in Le Locle was the first fully integrated Swiss watch manufacture. Still standing and operative, the brick façade and G.F. J.’s initials are a reminder of the founder’s industrial vision.

Six years ago, Zenith launched the Revival Liberty, another exclusive N. American-market model also draped in the flag’s colours. However, the Revival Liberty II inverts the colour scheme to honour the panda dial of the first A384. Using blueprints of the original, the A384 is a faithful reproduction of the 1969 model with a 37mm x 12.6mm angular, barrel-shaped case and pump-style pushers. Available in steel with a radial-brushed bezel and polished pushers, crown and bevels, the forged carbon option reveals the material’s signature marbled patterns.

The panda-style dial features a white lacquered background with contrasting dark blue sub-dials and a tachymeter scale. Bearing the red, white and blue colours of the American flag, there are also subtle touches of red on the chronograph seconds hand, which alternates 13 red and white stripes to reference the original colonies. The “4” on the date disc and the “250” marker on the tachymeter scale are also highlighted in red.

A direct descendant of the famous El Primero movement of 1969, the watches are powered by the El Primero calibre 400, an automatic, high-frequency (5Hz), integrated column-wheel chronograph with a horizontal clutch and a 50-hour power reserve.

The steel Revival Liberty II is a limited edition of 250 pieces. It is paired with a steel bracelet inspired by the original 1969 ladder bracelet made by Gay Frères for USD 10,600 and an additional blue Cordura-effect rubber strap. The carbon model, limited to 25 pieces, is only available with the blue Cordura-effect rubber strap for USD 13,400. Both models are retailed exclusively in the United States.
