The Panerai and Luna Rossa partnership sets sail once again with two new watches, one built around timing and performance, the other better suited to daily wear.

As the countdown to the 38th America’s Cup in Naples continues, Panerai is once again turning to one of its most successful partnerships of recent years. Since teaming up with Luna Rossa in 2019, Panerai has made the partnership into a proving ground for its modern sports watches. That has given us a series of pieces that look unmistakably Panerai but often come with technical touches, from Carbotech and titanium cases to useful complications such as GMTs and chronographs. It has been a pretty good run so far, and the latest chapter adds two more new watches to the collection: the Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768 and the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791.

Luna Rossa watches have become favourites among Paneristi because they rarely feel like ordinary team editions. Over the years, this solid line-up has delivered everything from a 47mm GMT diver inspired by the Italian Luna Rossa racing yacht to flyback chronographs and regatta timers. The more purpose-built of the two new releases is the Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768. Housed in a 44mm steel case, it pairs a silver sun-brushed dial with red details inspired by the Luna Rossa team colours. This one has been equipped with a speed tachymeter scale, which is quite handy when it comes to measuring average speed over a set distance. Working together with the central red-and-white chronograph seconds hand, it can calculate the average speed over one kilometre and display the result directly on the flange in kilometres or miles per hour.

Inside the PAM01768 is the automatic calibre P.9210, beating at 28,800 vibrations/hour and offering a 42-hour power reserve. The watch is a limited edition and introduces another first for the Luna Rossa collection, an elastic Velcro strap with a red central stripe and a quick-adjust design that feels perfectly suited to an active sports watch. A second black rubber strap is also included, which is always a welcome extra.

The Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791 is doing its thing differently. At 40mm, it is among the more compact watches in the Luna Rossa family. It also becomes the first Luna Rossa watch to be fitted with a metal bracelet, giving this series a different character, one that feels a little sportier and a little more versatile. The silver sun-brushed dial has red accents for a striking contrast. You will see this on the small seconds hand and the arrow-shaped GMT hand, whose shape is inspired by the sail of the Luna Rossa yacht.

Power comes from the automatic P.900/GMT calibre (ValFleurier-based) with a three-day power reserve and a 12-hour second-time-zone display. Like its chronograph sibling, the GMT is water-resistant to 100 metres and fitted with Panerai’s PAM Click release system, allowing the bracelet to be swapped for another strap without tools.

Novelties, but both are unmistakably Luminor, complete with the cushion case, oversized luminous dial, and crown-protecting bridge that have turned the family into a design icon. The Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768 is limited to 500 pieces, arrives in a deluxe blue cherry wood box, and is priced at EUR 11,200, while the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791 joins the regular collection at EUR 11,100 and comes in Panerai’s standard recycled-paper box accompanied by a travel pouch.
