A fascinating collision between Italian geometry and the retro-futuristic spirit of the legendary Antiqua.
For Geneva Watch Days 2026, Italian brand Bulgari and independent watchmaker Vianney Halter joined forces to bring us one of the most distinctive interpretations of the Octo Finissimo to date. Seen at a glance, the influence of Halter is unmistakable. The multiple displays, hands, white opaline surfaces and porthole-like bezels recall the legendary Antiqua, developed in the late 1990s during his collaboration with American designer Jeff Barnes. Yet the new watch is far more than an Antiqua adapted to an Octo case; it’s a convincing meeting between two very recognisable worlds.
Octo Finissimo Meets Antiqua
The collaboration is quite interesting because the Octo Finissimo and Halter’s work represent very different approaches to watch design. One is defined by sharp geometry, architectural layering and, above all, thinness. Halter’s best-known watches are more “mechanical and theatrical”, often resembling miniature machines with separate indications, complex case construction and a retro-futuristic, almost steampunk aesthetic.
The Antiqua is the obvious point of reference. Developed in the late 1990s, with Jeff Barnes involved in its early design and development, it became one of the defining watches of the early independent-watchmaking renaissance, before the works of MB&F and Urwerk. Its multiple circular displays, porthole-inspired architecture, blued hands and Victorian-meets-science-fiction personality made it unlike almost anything else at the time.
The Octo Finissimo Dual Time x Vianney Halter transforms some of these characteristics into an entirely different format. The construction immediately gives the watch a Halter-like personality with the miniature portholes emerging from the sharply geometric, multi-level architecture of the Octo Finissimo. It is a striking combination, especially as the individual displays contrast strongly with the highly angular case.
The Four Displays
The dial is divided into four separate elements. The two larger displays show local hours and minutes, while a second hand indicates the second time zone, alongside the running seconds. The other two indicators are dedicated to the date and day/night display. All the displays are opaline rhodium-plated, with time dials featuring sandblasted and satin-brushed finishes. I like that the GMT and date displays are marked; while it is hard to imagine anyone mistaking them for something else, these inscriptions add another touch to the watch’s machinery- and instrument-like feel.
The hands are pure Vianney Halter in spirit. The blue hands, shaped according to the independent watchmaker’s familiar aesthetic, indicate the time, joined by a short blue GMT hand and a red arrow seconds hand. The red triangle-tipped hand can initially be mistaken for the GMT hour hand. Still, once you remember the position of the running seconds on the Octo Finissimo Automatic, its placement starts to make sense. Still, a proper two-hand GMT display could have made the indication more complete from a functional perspective. The date indicator, fixed with two visible screws, frames the date on the moving disc.
A New Ultra-Thin Dual-Time Movement
The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Dual Time x Vianney Halter is powered by the new BVF 200 automatic calibre, developed and manufactured in-house, using the micro-rotor calibre BVL 138 as base. According to the technical information, the BVF 200 measures 5.49mm in height. The ultra-thin architecture has been enhanced with functions and modules to support Halter’s display concept.
The movement combines hours, minutes, GMT, running seconds, date, and day/night indications, and stores a 60-hour power reserve. It operates at 21,600 vibrations/hour. It is decorated with vertical Côtes de Genève, brushing and perlage, and the platinum micro-rotor is engraved with Vianney Halter’s signature. On the rose gold version, the micro-rotor is rose gold-coloured.
The Two Executions
The 50-part case measures 40.5mm in diameter and 9.7mm in total thickness, or just 7.7mm from the caseback to the highest point of the bezel, impressive proportions considering the number of layers and functions incorporated.
The Octo Finissimo Dual Time x Vianney Halter is offered in two versions. The titanium version, with its sandblasted case and integrated titanium bracelet, emphasises the industrial, retro-futuristic character of the collaboration. It is limited to 30 pieces. The 15-piece rose gold edition features a sandblasted case base with a circular-brushed upper section and satin-polished bezels. Worn on a brown alligator strap, it has a warmer and more luxurious appearance, though moving slightly away from the collection’s bracelet-focused character.
Both versions share a polished crown (with a black ceramic insert) for winding and setting local time, two rectangular pushers on the left to adjust the date and GMT hand, and a sapphire caseback. Water resistance is rated at 30m.
