A warm new version of the Extra Plat, combining its signature double-ellipse case in gold with a black gilt dial and traditional hand-executed guilloché.
Since its revival in 2023 under the direction of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, Daniel Roth has steadily reconstructed the distinctive design language of its founder, and the Extra Plat is perhaps its purest expression. A modern interpretation of Daniel Roth’s early time-only watches, it features the characteristic double-ellipse case and a slim, manually wound movement, with an emphasis on traditional decorative crafts. The latest version, the Extra Plat Rose Gold Gilt, is a darker and particularly elaborate take, introducing a gilt dial technique.
The elegant, fully polished case remains compact, measuring 38.6mm x 35.5mm and 7.7mm thick. It is crafted from 5N rose gold and has the familiar ellipsocurvex profile with the central gadroon that has become one of Daniel Roth’s signatures. A flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial, while another sapphire crystal reveals the movement from the back. Water resistance is 30m.
The dial base is made of gold and finished with a finely executed pinstripe guilloché pattern, created by a single artisan using a traditional rose engine. The surface is then subjected to multiple electroplating treatments to achieve its deep black colour. The Roman numerals, Daniel Roth signature and individual dial number are not printed but masked during the process. Once the masking is removed, the underlying gold is revealed, making the indications appear to emerge from the black surface.
The glossy black background, the gold minute track and rose-gold indications, all framed by a rose-gold case, give this Extra Plat a more dramatic character than the lighter versions of the collection.
Like the earlier variants, the Daniel Roth Extra Plat Rose Gold Gilt is powered by the manufacture Calibre DR002, a manually wound movement developed and assembled at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Designed for the Extra Plat, the shaped movement measures 31mm x 28mm and 3.1mm thick, comprising 143 components with 21 jewels. The DR002 operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour and delivers a 65-hour power reserve. The finishing includes hand-polished bevels, well-defined interior angles, and carefully executed decorative surfaces. The winding mechanism uses a bar click to provide a tactile winding experience.
