The Neode N01 First Edition Brings Architectural Design to Horology

Independent watchmaking has attracted designers from outside traditional horology before. Still, few have arrived with such a clearly defined architectural vision as Neode (from neod, an Old English word meaning desire and earnest endeavour). Architect Marius-Daniel Dumitrascu founded Neode, stepping away from architecture to devote himself entirely to developing the timepieces. Driven by a desire to be involved in every aspect of the process, from the design through to the technical conception, he has taken a 360-degree approach, working directly with and visiting each of the specialist suppliers involved in the making of the watches, ensuring that every component is produced to his exacting requirements. He has taken his approach even further by honing his photography skills to capture his own creations.

The London-based brand debuts with the N01 First Edition Pure Silver, a restrained-looking watch with complex case construction by Voutilainen, an extensively reworked Chronode movement, and a hand-finished silver dial by Les Cadraniers de Genève (a company owned by F.P. Journe). It is an intriguing watch, for its character emerges through proportion, material, texture and structural details. The credentials of the suppliers are impressive, but they do not overwhelm the debut.

The Neode N01 measures 39.5mm in diameter, 7.9mm thick and 45.5mm lug-to-lug. The domed sapphire crystal brings the total thickness to 9.9mm. The case is made from Grade 5 titanium and has a distinctive tonneau-like profile created by a double curvature that tapers towards the lugs. The shape is more complex than the appearance initially suggests. It forms a continuous shaped structure around the movement. The recessed crown sits inside a vertical cut in the case, with another cut on the opposite side for symmetry.

Voutilainen & Cattin, the case-making specialist, turned Dumitrascu’s design into metal. Alternating circular and straight brushing with mirror-polished lateral surfaces perfectly emphasise the geometry. Water resistance is 50m. Shaped to sit comfortably and snugly on the wrist, its profile, combined with lightweight titanium construction, ensures a light and balanced feel.

Les Cadraniers de Genève, a specialist Geneva dial maker known for its work with high-end independent brands including, naturally, F.P. Journe, makes the silver dial. Here, the emphasis is on texture rather than conventional decoration. The dial is divided into sectors by narrow shadow gaps. The central section and hour ring receive a traditional hand-applied grenage finish to create a finely granular surface that diffuses the light. The recessed seconds ring is azuré, with diamond-cut edges, while the raised minutes ring receives brushing.

At 12 o’clock, a recessed teal power-reserve indicator sits in one of the shadow gaps. It is so discreet that it almost disappears into the dial, especially when the power is at its lowest. The hands are made from 18ct 210 grey gold and receive slate-grey ceramic Super-LumiNova inserts, while the 12, 3, 6 and 9 markers are cut from solid blocks of ceramic Super-LumiNova rather than printed.

The N01 is powered by a heavily reworked version of the Chronode C101, developed with Jean-François Mojon and his team (and probably one of the most interesting takes on this movement). It is a manually wound movement, 3.98mm thick, with twin independent mainspring barrels providing an impressive 192-hour, or eight-day, power reserve. Dumitrascu and Chronode substantially redesigned the architecture, reworking the mainplate and bridges around a clear axis of symmetry and opening up the area around the balance.

Through the sapphire caseback, the eye is drawn to the Grade 5 titanium V-shaped balance bridge that is beautifully rounded and hand-polished. The free-sprung balance uses variable-inertia weights. The bridges are microbillé and treated with an anthracite galvanic finish, with hand-finished bevels and sharp internal anglage. The operating frequency is 21,600 vibrations/hour.

Altogether, the N01 feels elegant, understated and comfortable, with a focus on what matters. The watch is worn on an integrated rubber strap, closed with a custom-designed folding buckle in titanium. Limited to 25 pieces in this Pure Silver version, the N01 First Edition is priced at CHF 26,400 before taxes for the subscription, with deliveries scheduled for Q2 2027.
