The 200th Anniversary Moritz Grossmann Tefnut Silver-Plated by Friction
A classical Saxon watch, subtly refreshed with a lively green colour.
In 2026, Moritz Grossmann marks the 200th Anniversary of its founder, one of the key figures behind the rise of Glashütte as a watchmaking centre. Not looking backwards with literal recreations, the manufacture continues with its vision of evolution, respecting traditional Saxon watchmaking but expressing it through contemporary design and execution. The new Tefnut Silver-Plated by Friction, released as a limited anniversary edition, follows the earlier variant, keeping the slim proportions and minimal display, focusing on detail, craftsmanship and finish rather than complication.
For this commemorative release, the watch is offered in white gold and, for the first time in this collection, in yellow gold. Both share identical dimensions, 39mm in diameter and 8.5mm thick. The fully polished case remains intentionally discreet, with gently tapered lugs and a slim bezel. The introduction of yellow gold provides a warmer, slightly more expressive tone to what has historically been a more understated model.
The dial retains the familiar soft, matte appearance of previous Tefnut models, achieved through a demanding, rare technique: silver-plating by friction. This 19th-century process, performed entirely by hand in the manufacture’s ateliers, involves applying a paste of silver powder, salt and cream of tartar, then carefully brushing and polishing the surface until a fine, velvety grain emerges.
For this anniversary edition, the brand introduces green as a defining colour. The Arabic numerals, the tracks and the historic 1875 “M. Grossmann” logo are all rendered in this fresh tone. A small change, yet quite engaging, considered rather than decorative. The lance-shaped hands are each crafted by hand through a multi-step process. On the yellow gold version, they are polished gold; on the white gold model, they are heat-treated steel, in the brand’s signature brown-violet hue.
The sapphire caseback reveals the calibre 102.1, a hand-wound movement, measuring just over 3.5mm in height. The design is classic: a 3/5 plate construction, raised gold chatons secured by screws, and a finely shaped balance cock with a micrometric adjustment system. Finishings alternate between frosted, ribbed and polished treatments, and the edges are bevelled by hand. For this edition, the balance cock bears a hardly noticeable “1826” engraving, referencing the founder’s birth year. The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations/hout, has a large balance, and provides a 48-hour power reserve.
The watch is worn on a hand-stitched alligator leather strap, closed with a gold pin buckle matching the case. Produced in just 12 pieces per version, the Tefnut Silver-Plated by Friction 200th Anniversary Edition is a very limited release, available from April 2026. Prices are EUR 52,500 in white gold and EUR 54,300 in yellow gold. To put things in perspective, the unlimited rose gold version now retails for EUR 46,600, taxes included.
