IWC Goes Golfing with a New Olive Green Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 43
IWC is back as official timing partner for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, with a new edition of its aviation chronograph.
When you think of IWC and sports, you probably have Formula 1 in mind. And rightfully so… But today, we’ll be talking about golf, a noble sport that’s not often associated with the Schaffhausen-based brand. Yet, for the sixth consecutive year, IWC takes on the mantle of official timing partner for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. To celebrate, the brand is releasing a new and rather appealing version of its Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 43, featuring an olive green dial and golden accents. As for the relevance of using a Pilot’s Watch for golfing, I’ll let you judge that yourself.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is a pinnacle golfing event on the DP World Tour. Since 2001, it has become one of the most prestigious and distinctive events on the international calendar. Held annually in St Andrews, Scotland, each autumn, the Championship unites professional and amateur golfers. Its distinctive structure hosts two separate competitions: an individual professional tournament on the DP World Tour and a Team Championship featuring professional-amateur pairings.
IWC Schaffhausen returns to the Championship as the official timing partner for the sixth successive year, and to celebrate, the brand has released the new reference IW378008, an evolution of its larger Pilot’s Watch Chronograph. The changes are mostly on the dial, so the watch retains the classic 43mm stainless steel case with brushed and polished surfaces. Almost an oversized watch, it measures 14.8mm in thickness. Equipped with sapphire crystals on both sides, it comes with a screw-in crown and a solid 100m water-resistance.
New for this edition is the dial, in a new olive shade. Green isn’t new to the collection, as we’ve seen with the 41mm edition of this chronograph, the Racing Green Edition or the Big Pilot 43. The tone used here is, however, new for the brand, with a warmer shade paired with gold-plated hands for a cooler touch. All printed dial elements are in white and filled with Super-LumiNova, and the display remains classic: a tri-counter chronograph with a day-date function.
Under the sapphire back is the manufacture calibre 69385, a strong evolution of the Valjoux 7750 base, developed by IWC and Richemont’s production facilities at Valfleurier. Equipped with a column wheel, this automatic chronograph runs at a 4Hz frequency and stores about 46 hours of power reserve when fully wound. It is decorated with perlage and circular stripes, as well as an openworked rotor.
This new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 43 Olive Green IW378008 comes standard with a 5-link stainless steel bracelet, closed by a folding clasp. In addition, and benefiting from the brand’s EasX-CHANGE system, it is also delivered with an olive green rubber strap for a more casual look. Released as part of the permanent collection, this olive green, golf-inspired edition retails for EUR 9,700. More details at iwc.com.
