A blacked-out aesthetic with just a bit of colour for visual contrast
The latest oil-filled mechanical wonder from Ressence features a blacked-out theme that’s aesthetically similar to the limited Type 3 BBB from 2022, but a splash of dial colour was added for contrast. Unlike the standard Type 3 Black, the watch is in full stealth mode with a black DLC-coated case that merges with the glossy black dial/crystal that flows into it. Three different colours add a bit of punch to the otherwise monochromatic dial and it’s more concentrated to the dial’s centre than the Type 3 Black’s similar but more spread-out approach.
The Grade 5 titanium case again has a matte black DLC coating and is bold on the wrist at 44mm in diameter and 15mm in height. There are two sealed (upper and lower) halves of double-domed sapphire crystals with the upper portion filled with 3.57ml of oil, providing a pebble-like vibe. Water resistance is limited to 10 metres, so this is simply splash-resistant. The Type 5 offers 100 metres of water resistance for divers. There’s no crown, so the case back is rotated to wind and set the time. A 22mm black honeycomb strap with a titanium ardillon buckle comes standard.
The black dial is distortion-free and the white/light grey elements appear to be within the glass, thanks to the oil-filled design. The display is complex yet simple to understand with a regulator-type experience. The longest hand points to minutes, while the hours are within the large sub-dial at left. Days of the week are within a smaller sub-dial at 12 o’clock with green for the weekend. There’s an oil temperature gauge at 4 o’clock with blue and red (cold/hot) indicators. The outermost curvature has a rotating (pointer) date with a static marker at 6 o’clock. An internal Bellows System for pressure balance compensates for oil temperature fluctuations to maintain accuracy.
Powering the watch is a modified ETA 2824/2 automatic that drives the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System module. It has 47 jewels, beats at 28,800vph (4Hz) and features a 36-hour power reserve.
