The Glasgow-based microbrand adds to its colourful Modul series with automatic and hand-wound variants in two sizes.

You may not be familiar with Paulin Watches, but you’ve likely heard of anOrdain – Paulin’s sister brand. Both are based in Glasgow, Scotland where design and assembly occur, while Paulin’s dials are produced in Germany. anOrdain is known for its accessibly priced Grand Feu enamel dials, but Paulin specializes in whimsical models with colour and funky designs. Its small yet popular Modul series is now expanding with the D & E models, offering two case sizes and movements for each – 35mm hand-wound and 39mm automatic (as well as a 35mm quartz model).

The automatic Paulin Modul is the larger of the two, with a case diameter of 39mm and height of 9.7mm (lug-to-lug 45mm), while the unisex hand-wound model is small by today’s standard, at 35mm in diameter and 8.2mm in height (lug-to-lug 40mm). Both are stainless steel with hesalite crystals and 50 metres of water resistance. Strap options include black fabric or stainless steel mesh, with the 39mm case having a 20mm lug width and the 35mm case having 18mm. The design is nicely utilitarian, with a no-nonsense shape and finish that contrast with the freshness of the dials.

There are two dial variants in the new Modul D & E Collection, regardless of size or movement. The D models have black lacquer on brass, and the E models have brushed rhodium dials. They’re all time-only, with the hand-wound models featuring a small seconds counter at 6 o’clock and the automatics going with three central hands. Colour is playfully used in an almost Alain Silberstein way, with the D models sporting blue, white and red hands with white Arabic numerals and yellow indices and the E models showing orange and blue hands with blue Arabic numerals and orange indices. The hands and numerals have lume across the collection.

The automatic Paulin Modul models use a La Joux-Perret G101 with 24 jewels, a beat rate of 28,800vph (4Hz) and a power reserve of 68 hours. The hand-wound models use an ETA 7001 – also known as Peseux – with 17 jewels, a beat rate of 21,600vph (3Hz) and a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. Functions on both include central hours and minutes, while the ETA 7001 has small seconds at 6 o’clock and the G101 has three central hands. A quartz movement is also available for the 35mm case.

The smaller, hand-wound Paulin Modul D & E models are priced at GBP 825 (GBP 990 incl. VAT), and the 39mm automatics are priced at GBP 750 (GBP 900 incl. VAT). They will debut at the Windup Watch Fair New York with limited stock (October 18 – 20) and are also available to order from Paulin’s website.

  1. Just bought the black quartz version online.
I know quartz might be frown upon but the value is irresistible and the vintage sourcing of the movement with colorful see-through is actually really cool.
    Thanks for flagging it Monochrome!
