The new Murph has a classic military-watch design, with a blue textured dial and a bit of Interstellar connection at an approachable price.
Hamilton’s Murph watch got its popularity almost entirely from its role in Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film Interstellar. The watch created for the film returned as a production model in 2019, first in 42mm, before Hamilton introduced a smaller 38mm version in 2022. This 38mm model has carried different styles, from the original black dial to the white-dial and steel-bracelet versions. Now, the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm gets a deep blue dial. Blue is about as classic as it gets for a watch dial, and fans of the Murph who like their tool watches a little more traditional should find plenty to like here.
The 38mm steel case, with its classic field watch-inspired look, continues to measure 11.1mm thick, with curved lugs that help it sit neatly on the wrist. It also has brushed and polished surfaces, and its large crown keeps the watch looking more like a straightforward field watch than a dressier piece. The 100m water resistance is also pleasant.
The big change is certainly the dial, which is done in deep blue at the centre that gradually darkens towards the edges. Its surface has a strong grainy texture that reacts with light differently, depending on how you move the watch around. In person, the effect is less about a bright blue colour and more about the way the dial moves between blue and almost black. This also works well with the vintage-style beige numerals and cathedral hands. Hamilton says that its deep blue dial takes its cue from the journey of an interstellar comet.
The Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm in blue is powered by the H-10 automatic movement. You may also know it as Swatch Group’s Powermatic 80. This engine is an upgraded version of the ETA 2824 with a reworked kinetic chain, a 21,600 vibrations/hour frequency, a longer 80-hour power reserve, and an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring. The movement can be seen through the transparent caseback.
The new Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm in blue comes on either a black leather strap with contrasting stitching or a stainless-steel bracelet. Priced at EUR 1,045 on the steel bracelet and EUR 995 on the leather strap, it makes for a pretty compelling package, especially if you want a military-inspired watch with some cinematic history thrown in.
