The New TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox with Panda Dial (incl. Video)

The new "Panda" edition exudes a distinctively sporty flair, underscoring the timepiece's dynamic nature.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox 39mm reference, drawing inspiration from the iconic 1960s model, the Heuer Carrera 7753 SN, introduces a universally beloved panda-style chronograph dial. This latest addition to the series is the first to offer a bracelet option, a significant departure from the previous strap-only models. The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph “Panda” shares the same design as the blue dial reference CBS2212.FC6535, differing only in its colour scheme. However, the unique features of this timepiece, such as the panda-style dial and the option for a bracelet, make it a compelling choice.

The 39mm Carrera case with its signature design elements is crafted from stainless steel and has 13.86mm thickness and 46mm lug-to-lug. It features brushed and polished finishes to accentuate the sporty look, with the classic round mushroom-style chronograph pushers, polished at 2 and 4 o’clock and the crown in between, decorated with the shield logo on top and fluted for easy grip. The glass-box design of the sapphire crystal mimics the domed hesalite crystals featured on the early Carrera models in the 1960s and is distinguished by a curve that flows over the dial edge and into the case.

The Carrera Chronograph Glassbox “Panda” features a silver dial with a sunray brushed finish. A gibbous black flange hosts a tachymeter scale closer to the edge and a minutes/seconds track on the inner slope. The distinctive black “azuré” 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and the 12-hour chronograph counter at 9 give the dial its panda nickname. Positioned at 6 o’clock, the running seconds subdial seamlessly integrates with the silver surface of the main dial and incorporates a metal-framed date window.

Rhodium-plated facetted and polished applied indexes descend from the minutes track slope and rest on the dial, with luminous dots thoughtfully placed near indices’ tops. With the white Super-LumiNova on the rhodium-plated, facetted, and polished hour and minute hands, these dots enhance legibility in dimly lit conditions. Embracing its racing heritage, the Carrera Chronograph “Panda” features red accents – the central chronograph seconds hand is tipped in red, and the counters boast small red lacquered hands.

Like its predecessors, the new Carrera Chronograph “Panda” is powered by the calibre TH20-00, an updated Heuer 02 automatic movement featuring bi-directional winding. This movement offers a generous 80 hours of power reserve with a full wind. The calibre TH20-00 showcases fine finishing details and can be admired through the screw-down sapphire crystal caseback.

The Carrera Chronograph “Panda” is now available for purchase as a non-limited edition, sporting the steel three-row bracelet for a secure fit on the wrist. The price is CHF 6,500, taxes included which seems like quite a fair mark-up over the leather strap editions.

  1. Quite nice…except for the date window and what it does to the bottom subdial.. Just doesn’t work for me.
