The Speake Marin One & Two Openworked Sandblasted Red Gold And Titanium
The superb SMA-01 micro-rotor movement gets a sandblasted finish.
If Speake Marin has recently made waves with its sport-chic Ripples line, its Piccadilly case remains a brand signature Inherently Speake Marin. Watches featuring the Piccadilly case embody British elegance, controlled eccentricity, and classic Swiss Haute Horlogerie. The One & Two collection underwent a tasteful revamping in 2017 in collaboration with watch designer Eric Giroud. The latest iterations showcase a distinct and interesting personality, featuring sandblasted versions of the brand’s SMA-01 micro-rotor calibre.
The Piccadilly case is the evolution of the emblematic Speake-Marin design that was tastefully revamped in 2017 with the expertise of watch designer Eric Giroud. Among various enhancements, its signature tubular body appears more slender due to a box-shaped glass that reduces its profile, and the distinctive lugs have been reworked. The “openworked” versions come in four variations, offering a choice of two materials, red gold or grade 5 titanium, each available in two sizes: 38mm and 42mm (please note that the watches we had the opportunity to photograph are the larger 42mm versions).
At their heart is the in-house SMA01 calibre. Since 2015, Speake-Marin has initiated a strategy to develop and manufacture its calibres in the Neuchatel area at Le Cercle des Horlogers – Christelle Rosnoblet, CEO and Owner of Speake Marin is also a shareholder in this company that specialises in Haute Horlogerie movements. The SMA01 stands out for the atypical positioning of its small seconds at 1.30, which creates an interesting triangulation with the micro-rotor and barrel. From a technical perspective, it measures 30mm x 5mm, the frequency is 4Hz and the power reserve is 52 hours.
As their name suggests, the latest iterations of the model feature a sandblasted version of this movement. The rough yet elegant silver-coloured grained surface of the main plate and bridges contrasts with their polished chamfers and jewel sinks resulting in a captivating play of lights. The main plate features an 8-shaped opening revealing the micro-rotor and the barrel engraved with the brand’s values: RESPECT, INDEPENDENCE, LIBERTE, UNIQUE, AUTHENTICITE, GENEVE, CREATIVITE, MODERNITE. The matte black minute indications and the small seconds counter are applied in 3D. In characteristic Speake Marin style, the hours and minutes are indicated by spade & whip hands. These are polished and coated in black or gold to provide a pleasing contrast with the blasted surface of the movement.
Flipping the watch over, the exhibition case back allows you to discover the other side of this sandblasted version of the SMA-01 calibre. The micro-rotor is integrated under the brand’s hallmark watchmaking topping tool under a gold-plated bridge.
The Speake Marin One and Two Openworked Sandblasted comes on a grained leather strap with either a gold pin buckle or a titanium folding buckle. The red gold versions retail for CHF 34,000 (38mm) and CHF 38,700 in red gold (42mm). The prices of the titanium versions are respectively of CHF 22,200 and CHF 22,600.

A nice looking watch, but rather disappointing to see a basic ETAchron balance spring assembly in there – especially for CHF22,000 to 38,000. It just seems a little out of place, given the rest of the movement.
Sucks!
