The New Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph SLGC009

With refined details to the bold case and the addition of chronograph functionality, this latest GS Sport model is a compelling choice—if you dare.

Grand Seiko introduced the Tokyo Lion’s bold, angular case design in 2019 and since then, additional editions have multiplied its aesthetic —limited and regular production—the most recent being the 2024 Sport Spring Drive GMT SBGE307 Tokyo Lion and the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT SBGC275. This year, the Grand Seiko Sport collection expands by unveiling a new model featuring an updated design powered by the brand’s first mechanical chronograph movement, the Tentagraph.

The “Tokyo Lion” is one of Grand Seiko’s most distinctive designs – a bold, angular case inspired by a lion’s paw. With dimensions of 43mm x 15.6mm, this new edition makes a strong statement, and its broad, flat surfaces and claw-like lugs provide the ideal canvas for Zaratsu polishing, enhancing its striking appearance.

In this latest evolution, the claw-inspired, hairline-finished surfaces are more pronounced than in previous models, extending beyond the lugs to the bezel, with special attention given to the design of the chronograph pushers. The SLGC009 is the first in the Sport Collection to feature Grand Seiko’s Brilliant Hard Titanium alloy. The box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface tops the case, and the subtly curved see-through case back allows the watch to sit more comfortably on the wrist. The construction is 200m water-resistant and provides protection from magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m.

The dial of the Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph SLGC009 retains the signature lion-themed texture inspired by “the mane of the lion as it waves in the wind” – resembling a series of horizontal, rope-like lines. The three-dimensional, concave, bowl-shaped sub-dials are integrated into the main dial at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. The chronograph totalizers feature striking red hands on black backgrounds, while the running seconds sub-dial at 3 o’clock in brown blends in. An inclined black inner flange houses the minutes/seconds track on the dial’s periphery, marked in white and red to reflect the high-beat nature of the underlying movement.

The diamond-cut hour indices—specifically designed tall and hollow to hold ample Lumibrite—ensure excellent visibility and reinforce the watch’s aggressive aesthetic. The broad hour and minute hands, also generously coated with Lumibrite, contrast against the dark beige background and mirroring the indices in their bold look. Completing the dial, the central chronograph hand is accented with a red tip, while a discreet date window at 4:30 adds a functional touch.

As its name suggests, the Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph SLGC009 is powered by the brand’s first mechanical chronograph movement—the high-beat Tentagraph Caliber 9SC5. 9SC5 is built upon the Caliber 9SA5 base and incorporates a chronograph module while maintaining exceptional performance. The Tentagraph operates at a 5Hz frequency (36,000 vibrations per hour) and features a double-barrel layout that delivers a 72-hour power reserve. The movement also utilizes Grand Seiko’s advanced Dual Impulse Escapement with a free-sprung balance, ensuring precision with a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day—even when the chronograph is engaged.

The Tentagraph SLGC009 comes fitted with a newly developed brown rubber strap, secured by a High-Intensity Titanium three-fold clasp with a push-button release for comfort and durability. This Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph is priced at EUR 17,500.
