The Cuervo y Sobrinos Gran Premio de Cuba Chronograph Trilogy Celebrates Havana’s Racing Heritage
Three limited-edition chronographs inspired by the legendary Cuban Grand Prix races of 1957, 1958 and 1960.
Cuba may be making headlines today for reasons far removed from motorsport, but there was a time when Havana was among the most glamorous destinations in the world. During the 1950s, the city was a vibrant mix of culture, entertainment and international sport, attracting celebrities, entrepreneurs, and racing drivers. It was the racing capital of the Caribbean, a host to one of the most fascinating chapters in motorsport history: the Gran Premio de Cuba. Decades later, and following the Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 (released in 2023), Cuervo y Sobrinos once again looks back to this remarkable period with the new Gran Premio de Cuba Chronograph Trilogy.
This new collection celebrates the only three editions of the famous race, won by Juan Manuel Fangio (1957) and Sterling Moss (1958, 1960), and each watch takes direct inspiration from the original race posters, their colours and graphics. The three models share the same construction but differ in execution. The Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 features a warm brown dial paired with mustard-coloured counters, inspired by vintage racing liveries and the artwork of the inaugural event.
The 1958 edition gets a bold yellow dial with contrasting green counters, recalling the most famous race of the series, forever associated with the kidnapping of Juan Manuel Fangio on the eve of the event (orchestrated by Fidel Castro’s men to embarrass then Cuban president Batista; they succeeded; Fangio was released unharmed after 29 hours). Completing the trilogy is the Gran Premio Libertad 1960, distinguished by a crisp white dial and vivid red counters inspired by the geometric poster of the final Cuban Grand Prix.
All three watches are housed in a 41mm stainless steel case, 15.25mm thick. The design follows the elegant yet sporty character often seen in Cuervo y Sobrinos chronographs, with rectangular pushers, flowing case lines and a double-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. A sapphire caseback reveals the movement and features a dedicated engraving of the corresponding race year. The dial layout is classic Valjoux 7750, with running seconds at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at noon, a 12-hour totaliser at 6 o’clock, with a date display integrated. Leaf-shaped hands indicate the time, and red arrow-shaped hands are used for the chronograph readings.
Powering the watches is the automatic Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Beating at 28,800 vibrations/hour and offering a 48-hour power reserve, it remains one of the most robust and reliable chronograph calibres ever produced. The rotor has been customised to resemble a classic steering wheel and decorated with a gold-coloured Cuervo y Sobrinos emblem.
The series is worn on a black perforated calfskin strap inspired by vintage driving gloves, with contrast stitching matching the colours of the dial counters. The Gran Premio de Cuba Chronograph production numbers reflect the distance of each historic race. The 1957 edition is limited to 162 pieces, the 1958 edition to 174, and the 1960 model to 202. Price is to be confirmed.
