The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Historic Endurance, a Chronograph for Gentlemen Drivers

CyS celebrates its role as the official timekeeper of the Iberian Historic Endurance race with a Gentlemen Drivers' chronograph.

As the only Swiss brand with Latin roots, it makes perfect marketing sense for Cuervo y Sobrinos to support the Iberian Historic Endurance. In this race, pre-1976 racing cars compete in different categories in circuits located primarily in Spain and Portugal. To celebrate the alliance, Cuervo y Sobrinos presents a sporty chronograph, the Historiador Historic Endurance, with a classic British Racing Green dial and silver-toned counters designed to capture the more relaxed mood of the “Gentlemen Driver Spirit” category where crossing the finish line is not the primary goal.

The distinctive case of the vintage-inspired Historiador family has been selected to house the chronograph. Measuring 40mm across with a thickness of 12.45mm, the polished stainless steel case flaunts the flamboyant angled, downward-curving lugs of the Historiador but uses rectangular pushers instead of piston pushers found on other Historiador Chronographs like the recent Premio de Cuba 1957 model. Fitted with a double-curved sapphire crystal over the dial and a sapphire caseback, the water-resistance rating is 50m.

The two-tone dial has a bicompax layout with a British Racing Green background and snailed silver-coloured sub-dials placed horizontally in the centre of the dial; the 30-minute totaliser at 9 o’clock is distinguished by its black arrow-tipped hand. Highlighting its association with motorsports timing, the dial has a black taquimetro or tachymeter scale on the periphery and the inscription ‘Historic Endurance’ printed just above the date window at 6 o’clock. Large Arabic numerals with black outlines and white interiors are read by the relatively short leaf-shaped hands. The hour markers and the central hour and minute hands are luminescent.

The CYS 8129 calibre, using a modular ETA 2894, can be seen from the sapphire caseback. An automatic movement beating at 28,800vph it delivers a power reserve of 42 hours. The sapphire features a red decal with the ‘Historic Endurance’ logo and the number 76, a reference to the year 1976, marking the cut-off date for cars competing in the race.
