Doxa unveils the SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler, The Iconic Diver Reimagined in Titanium
A return of the original Doxa SUB 300 dive watch, reimagined in grade 5 titanium.
There is no denying that Doxa is one of the most revered brands when it comes to dive watches. The brand, which has been active since the 1960s in this field, has produced several of the most emblematic divers’ instruments. Yet, if there were one watch to remember, it would be the SUB 300, a foundational watch introduced in 1967. Relaunched in the late 2010s thanks to several Aqua Lung, Poseidon, Silver Lung, and Black Lung editions, it returned to the permanent collection in 2020. Since then, we’ve seen all possible colours, carbon cases, or even luminous dials. But now, it’s time for the icon to resurface in grade 5 titanium, and as a limited edition linked to Clive Cussler, an American adventure novelist and underwater explorer who possibly had the most influence on the success of Doxa. Meet the new SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler.

This grade 5 titanium SUB 300 (the vintage-inspired model, not the modern SUB 300 Beta or SUB 300T) marks the fourth limited edition made together with Clive Cussler and NUMA – National Underwater and Marine Agency – the organisation he founded in 1979 to search for and preserve historic shipwrecks. Clive Cussler (1931-2020) was an American adventure novelist and underwater explorer who wrote over 85 books, selling over 100 million copies. Many of his novels featured character Dirk Pitt as the hero, a tall, muscular man who graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and served as a pilot in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. And on his wrist was an orange dial Doxa dive watch, which has been crucial in the popularity of the brand. The full story is explained here.
As said, this new titanium model marks the fourth Doxa watch to bear the name Clive Cussler, following the SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition with aged case and compass dial, the SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler, essentially the same watch in black, and the SUB 750T Clive Cussler Edition, a redesigned version of one of Doxa’s most robust dive watches. For its fourth chapter in the Cussler series, Doxa relies on what’s potentially its most appealing platform, the historically correct and vintage-inspired SUB 300, but here treated from case to dial in titanium.
As a classic SUB 300 model, this Ti5 Clive Cussler edition retains fairly compact proportions, as despite the 42.50mm diameter, this retro-styled version is short on the wrist, measuring 45mm in lug-to-lug. What sets it apart from more modern versions is the use of a box-shaped sapphire crystal, recalling old plexiglass protections. And if it adds a bit of thickness to the watch (13.40mm), it also looks much more appealing. Another difference with a SUB 300T is the absence of a helium escape valve, giving it a sleeker look. Water-resistance remains rated at 300m, though.
So what makes this version unique? Well, simple: the use of grade 5 titanium for the case, crown, bezel and caseback. While the material is different and the feel on the wrist is much lighter too, the watch remains visually and technically identical with circular brushed surfaces on top, polished sides and capable of the same diving credentials. Framing the crystal is a classic of Doxa, the shark-toothed bezel with dual scale: a no-deco scale with depth (helping divers remain within the no-decompression limits established by the US Navy), with orange markings over a polished surface, and a 60-minute scale with black markings over a brushed surface.
Titanium isn’t reserved for the case, but also finds its way on the dial. Not only is it made of sandblasted grade 5 titanium, but the dial SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler also introduces an entirely new dial architecture, composed of two superimposed dials, creating a layered “sandwich” effect. The upper dial, positioned a short distance above the first, openings matching the exact proportions of the hour markers have been laser-cut. A central aperture aligns with the luminous index beneath, and two lateral cut-outs reproduce Doxa’s classic geometry. The date aperture and minute markers are produced using the same technique. The handset is classic Doxa, with blackened hours and second hands, and an oversized orange minute hand. Also note that on the date disc, as a tribute to Clive Cussler’s birth date, the numerals 15, 7 and 31 appear in orange.
Inside the titanium case of the Doxa SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler is a COSC-certified version of the Sellita SW200-1, a tried-and-tested movement known as an alternative to the ubiquitous ETA 2824. Running at 4Hz, it stores 38 hours of power reserve. The caseback covering it bears the emblem of NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency), the COSC certification and the individual numbering of each watch.
Fitted with a black Dive Flex rubber strap featuring a tropical-inspired aesthetic, the SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler is limited to 300 individually numbered pieces, available from Doxa’s website and, for the first time, from its authorised retailers too. It is immediately available and priced at CHF 2,890, EUR 3,190 or USD 3,390. Part of the proceeds will go to support the work of NUMA, founded by Clive Cussler.
