Citizen Brings Damascus Steel and Forged Carbon to a new Series 8 GMT
A new limited edition under the Series 8 collection that combines true GMt with unexpected materials.
With its Series 8 collection of mechanical watches, Citizen has been delivering rather impressive models over the years, with the GMT collection being possibly the most appealing of them. Not only is it powered by a true GMT automatic movement (something rare in this price range), but Citizen has dared to bring singular designs, colours and materials to stand out from the crowd. The latest limited edition, reference NB6092-01E, is based on what the brand calls “heritage meets modern” and is all about traditional and contemporary materials mixed in one watch: Damascus steel for the case, forged carbon for the dial…
The base for this new limited edition is well-known as of now, using the same case geometry as previous standard or limited version. A bold, angular, ultra-sharp take on the integrated sports watch genre, the Series 8 GMT relies on a tonneau-shaped case with a nicely integrated bracelet that follows the lines of the case. Dimensions are reasonable on paper, with a 41mm diameter and a thickness of 13.5mm, but the watch has great presence on the wrist – as you can see here. For this new edition, the case is yellow gold-plated and paired with a bidirectional bezel fitted with a black and brown transparent insert. The watch is protected by a sapphire crystal on top and features a see-through caseback. Despite the absence of a screw-down crown, water-resistance is rated at a comfortable 100m.
The first distinctive element of this watch is mostly visible on the mid-link used to connect the case to the strap – indeed, this version isn’t fitted with an integrated metal bracelet, but instead a black leather strap with a folding clasp. But look closer, and you’ll see more of the textured metal, as Damascus steel is also used for the entire middle case; the wave-like patterns are present on the sides too. Damascus steel represents the “heritage” side, being an ancient technique to craft swords and knives. And since the material is man-made, no two watches will have the same pattern.
The “modern” side of the watch is visible on the dial, which is made from forged carbon, a tough but lightweight material that is used on aircraft and high-performance sports cars. The short carbon fibre strands of forged carbon are randomly mixed and moulded in a way that creates unique patterns, again giving each watch its own identity. All elements of the dial are gold-coloured to match the case.
Inside the case is the calibre 9054, an in-house movement (produced by Miyota, one of Citizen Group’s subsidiaries) with automatic winding. Running at 4Hz, it can store up to 50 hours of power reserve. But most importantly, this is a true GMT movement, on which the local hour hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments, making it particularly practical when travelling… a rare feature in this price range.
Released in a limited run of 1,300 pieces, the new Citizen Series 8 GMT Damascus Steel and Forged Carbon NB6092-01E is a bold addition to the collection that is priced at EUR 1,495 or USD 2,200. For more information, please visit CitizenWatch.eu or CitizenWatch-Global.com.
