The Bremont Supernova Hawking Limited Edition
A tribute to Stephen Hawking, inspired by black holes and built on Bremont's new space-oriented chronograph.
The launch of the Supernova collection earlier this year marked a new direction for British brand Bremont, introducing a bold integrated sports chronograph inspired by spacecraft engineering and destined to become the first watch left permanently on the Moon. Still looking to the stars, Bremont presents the Supernova Hawking Limited Edition, which uses the Supernova Chronograph’s platform to celebrate the physicist’s pioneering research into black holes. This second collaboration with the family of Professor Stephen Hawking follows the 2020 Hawking collection, which featured pieces from Hawking’s desk, a meteorite, and references to his scientific work.
The new Supernova Hawking retains the angular construction of the standard collection chronograph, but is presented in a much darker version. The 41mm case is crafted from DLC-coated 904L stainless steel and measures 14.4mm thick, with a lug-to-lug of 48.7mm. A black ceramic decagonal bezel, an integrated bracelet or a rubber strap, and a faceted case construction reinforce the futuristic aesthetic introduced with the Supernova collection. The watch remains a capable sports chronograph with a large screw-down crown, sapphire crystals front and back, and 100m of water resistance.
Spacecraft solar arrays inspire the dial design; its black galvanic surface is embossed with a geometric grid pattern that draws the eye towards the centre. The chronograph counters at 3 and 9 o’clock are crafted from genuine meteorite, so every watch carries a unique crystalline texture formed long before reaching Earth. At 6 o’clock sits the date display and a discreet tribute to Hawking’s scientific legacy, with his name and the famous equation describing the thermodynamic entropy of a black hole (the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula), developed by Jacob Bekenstein and Stephen Hawking. Look into the subject, and why this discovery is important, a fascinating read, worthy of your time.
For the watch readings, applied triangular hour markers are filled with white Super-LumiNova that emits blue light, and the black-gold hands receive the same luminous treatment. The central chronograph seconds hand is tipped in white for additional contrast, and a tachymeter scale is printed around the outer dial.
Turning the watch over reveals another reference to Hawking’s work. The exhibition caseback features a printed black hole motif, creating the impression of looking through the event horizon towards the chronometer-rated automatic calibre BC77, based on the Sellita SW500 (an alternative to the Valjoux 7750). Running at 28,800 vibrations/hour, it offers a 62-hour power reserve and features a Glucydur balance, an Anachron hairspring and Nivaflex mainspring.
The Bremont Supernova Hawking Limited Edition is available on either an integrated DLC-coated steel bracelet or a black rubber strap, both fitted with quick-release systems. Production is limited to 600 pieces, with the watch priced at GBP 7,950. More information at bremont.com.
