Known mostly for its military-inspired and pilot’s watches from the BR-01 and BR-03 series, the emblematic circle-within-a-square design, Bell & Ross has long mastered the use of luminescent materials, either to amplify functionality or to create striking models. All marketed under the Lum series, this ample use of Super-LumiNova has become a signature and is now finding its way into the brand’s dual-time watch, the BR-03 GMT. Updated in 2021 with a Coke-inspired scheme, later joined by a blue edition and finally a rather cool compass model, there’s now a new version, the BR-03 GMT Green Lum, with lots of luminescence and a gradient green dial inspired by the glow of Northern lights.

This new Green Lum edition is based on the classic BR 03-93 GMT introduced in 2021. As such, it shares the same technical specifications and most of its design elements, starting with its 42mm x 42mm case, a rounded square with a circular opening for the dial and a screw at each corner – a design that’s meant to recall that Bell & Ross watches came from the cockpit to be worn on the wrist. The case is reasonable in height, at 11.3mm, water-resistant to 100m and equipped with a sapphire crystal on top.

A classic GMT (office-style) pilot’s watch, the BR-03 GMT Green Lum is equipped with a bidirectional 24-hour rotating bezel. However, this version introduces a new black polished ceramic insert, and all markings are, Lum series obliges, treated with green-emitting Super-Luminova C3. Just like recent models from the brand, such as the revised BR-03 series, this GMT edition has a more refined finish than before, with brushed surfaces and broad polished bevels on the edges.

The dial is the other main update for this limited edition, as it adopts a vertical green-to-black gradient effect, said to evoke a night sky illuminated by the glow of Northern lights. The green colour scheme also applies to the numerals, hour markers and hands, which are, like the bezel, coated with pale green, green-emitting Super-Luminova C3. This version adopts a slightly more military look, with its blackened hours and minutes (polished steel on the standard BR-03 GMT), as well as a seconds hand with an aeroplane-shaped tip and an openworked, triangular GMT hand.

Inside the case is the Calibre BR-CAL.303 based on the Sellita SW330-2, which means that we’re looking at an office-style GMT watch and not a true traveller’s function (see the difference here and why it matters). In short, the crown independently adjusts the central 24h hand, not the local hour hand. This tried-and-tested movement is here employed in its most recent version with an elongated power reserve of 54 hours.

Worn on a black rubber strap with an ultra-resilient black synthetic fabric strap also included in the presentation box, the Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT Green Lum is a limited edition of 500 pieces, priced at EUR 4,900. For more details, please consult bellross.com.
