The New Zenith Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical
The tropical-style dial adds an extra layer of nostalgia to an already iconic revival.
For many people, 1969 is the year of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Woodstock and the final live performance of The Beatles on a London rooftop. However, for watch enthusiasts, 1969 is the year Zenith unveiled the El Primero, the world’s first automatic, integrated chronograph calibre – and a high-frequency one to boot. Among the three inaugural watches to receive the remarkable movement, the bold tonneau-shaped case of the A384, and its two-tone panda dial, tapped into the groove of the era. Taking another trip down memory lane, Zenith presents a warm, tropical dial version of the A384 complemented by a remake of the signature ladder bracelet made by Gay Frères in 1969 for the watch.
Launched as a movement in January 1969, the integrated El Primero high-frequency column-wheel chronograph calibre was eventually housed in three variants: the classic round A386 model with tri-colour counters, the A385 cushion-shaped model with a gradient brown dial, and the reference A384 with the same bold angular case as the A385 but with a panda dial (white background, black counters). To celebrate the El Primero’s 50th birthday, Zenith released a series of commemorative models to mark the past, present and future of the movement and 1:1 Revivals of the foundation watches (A386, A384 and A385).
The Revival A384 is not just a vintage-inspired watch: it is an accurate reproduction of the original. To achieve this level of fidelity, Zenith used the original 1969 blueprints and production plans to recreate the angular barrel-shaped case. Like the original, the 37mm case with a thickness of 12.6mm is decorated with the same radial-brushed bezel and polished bevels, pump-style pushers and crown. The only features that are not historically accurate are the domed sapphire crystal, replacing the acrylic glass and the display caseback.
The accurate revival of the A384’s case gets an extra layer of nostalgia thanks to its Tropical dial. Described by the brand as a “chocolate panda” configuration, the three sub-dials and the peripheral tachymeter scale have a warm brown colour that captures the character of vintage watch dials that have gradually faded over time. Often associated with black dials exposed to ultraviolet light that reacts with the chemical composition of the paint or lacquer, this “manufacturing defect” soon became a sought-after feature for collectors.
The off-white lacquered background works well with the brown elements, giving the dial a warm presence. Evoking the yellow-toned glow of aged tritium, the faceted hour markers and hands are treated with “old radium” Super-LumiNova. Details like the vivid red chronograph seconds hand with its rectangular lumed area, the brown 12-hour sub-dial with numerals that leak ever so slightly from the chapter ring into the snailed interior, the period-correct font and the quirky date aperture at 4:30 consolidate the mid-century heritage of the watch.
Like the 1969 model, the A384 Revival is fitted with a steel bracelet inspired by the original ladder bracelet made by Gay Frères with its open central links, just like the rungs of a ladder.
Still in production 57 years later, the El Primero column-wheel chronograph movement with a horizontal clutch has been upgraded over its lifetime (don’t miss our extensive review of its evolutions here). Now known as the calibre 400, the movement powering the A384 Chronomaster Revival is the most faithful descendant of the original El Primero 3019 PHC of 1969. Thanks to tighter tolerances in the manufacturing process, the El Primero calibre 400 movement delivers better chronometric precision but retains the same architecture as its ancestor with a high-frequency of 5Hz and a 50-hour power reserve.
The Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical is released as part of the permanent collection and retails for CHF 8,900, EUR 9,600 or USD 9,200. More information at zenith-watches.com.
