The Revamped Tudor Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt
Same old look but every single detail has been refined...
At first, this new version of the Black Bay 58 may seem like a minor update, mostly focused on introducing reworked bracelets and details to remain consistent with the rest of the BB collection. Yet, things can be deceptive. In recent years, as the Black Bay collection is more than well established, Tudor has been working on updating its cornerstone models in a way that has felt very discreet. Take, for example, the Black Bay Monochrome. At first, it felt like a new colour scheme and new bracelet options. Yet, the update was profound. The same can be said about the Black Bay 58, a model first launched in 2018 and deeply revised last year, with a striking Burgundy edition. It is time now for the all-important black version to undergo the same update. And, once again, there is more to this than meets the eye.

First seen in 2018, the Black Bay 58 was Tudor’s answer to those finding the classic Black Bay too large. Indeed, instead of 41mm, the 58 scaled things down to a wrist-friendly 39mm, with a reduced thickness of about 12mm, down from the original’s hefty 15mm. Lug width, for the pleasure of strap lovers, was trimmed to 20mm, and while the design stayed true to the Black Bay DNA, touches such as the oversized crown adorned with the vintage Tudor rose added to its nostalgic appeal. Tudor also developed a more compact manufacture movement to match this downsized case – the calibre MT5402 – boasting the same specifications as its larger sibling.
Since its introduction in 2018, the BB58 has been available in an array of versions, starting with the classic Black-Gilt model, followed by the blue-on-blue edition. Later, Tudor played with materials and offered the Black Bay 58 in bronze, silver, gold and even added a fantastic GMT option to the collection. Last year, the model got its biggest update ever. Not only did Tudor release a new all-burgundy edition, but the whole watch was revamped. New case, new dial, new movement, revised crown and bezel, updated handset, and a movement with strong accuracy and certifications. Basically, the same recipe was used by Tudor when revamping the classic Black Bay in 2023 with a burgundy bezel and in 2024 with the Monochrome edition. Almost identical at a glance… But almost everything was updated.
It’s time now for Tudor to update what’s probably the most important model in the Black Bay 58 collection, and potentially one of its best-selling models, the Black Bay 58 with black dial, a model that we internally call the “Black-Gilt” due to its warm, gold-toned accents. Let’s start with the case, which is, like the burgundy edition of 2025, lightly retouched in several areas. First, if the diameter remains the same at 39mm, the revamped BB58 is marginally thinner at 11.7mm, paired with a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.8mm. In short, near-perfect proportions for a recreational dive watch with 200m water-resistance, and compared to the rest of the market, fairly thin. The watch is topped by a vintage-like box-shaped sapphire crystal, and the sides of the case, even though the overall thickness hasn’t changed much, feel significantly thinner than before.
There are multiple other updates to report on the case. Sure, the BB58 Black-Gilt still looks familiar, but in line with the burgundy edition, almost every part has been tuned. The crown, for instance, returns to a classic, smaller design with more pronounced notches, reminiscent of older Tudor watches. It also sits closer to the case. The bezel follows suit, with a sharper, more defined knurling – “toothier” than before, as the old BB58 had a coin-edge profile. Finally, the updated Black Bay 58 retains its classic anodised aluminium insert in black, with a gilt 60-minute scale, red triangle and a lumed pearl. There are also very subtle tweaks to the font used for the numerals.
Moving to the dial, what remains is the Black-Gilt style, the matte surface of the dial and its lightly domed profile. A far more classic, more discreet and more conventional look than last year’s burgundy edition, it retains everything we’ve loved in the original BB58 of 2018, but again discreetly tweaks everything. First, the hands, applied markers and text all have gold accents, giving this smaller version of the BB its vintage charm. Yet, you can spot several differences with the 2018 edition:
- Two lines of text only, compared to three lines in the past
- The “Master Chronometer” print instead of the classic COSC “Chronometer Officially Certified”
- Classic handset with Snowflake hour hand, but revised as the hands are now pinched on the central axle
- New lollipop seconds hand with counterweight instead of a diamond-shaped model without counterweight
The Tudor Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt is powered by the same self-winding manufacture calibre MT5400-U as the Burgundy edition. Produced by Kenissi, it boasts 65 hours of power reserve and operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour. This movement is Master Chronometer-certified by METAS, after being first inspected by COSC. Once cased, it undergoes additional testing for precision across six positions, at two different temperatures, and at two levels of power reserve. It also must demonstrate resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. The MT5400-U features a non-magnetic silicon balance spring. It includes a stop-seconds function for precise time setting, is equipped with a variable inertia balance and has a transversal balance bridge.
As with most of its watches, Tudor releases the Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt with several options to secure the watch to the wrist. First is a classic of the brand, the 3-link rivet-style steel bracelet. New to the model is a 5-link jubilee-style steel bracelet and a black rubber option, giving the watch a slightly more modern edge. All are closed by a folding clasp with the brand’s T-Fit system. This practical system allows wearers to carry out fine, instant adjustments of the total length of the bracelet along an adjustment window of 8mm. The clasp also features ceramic ball bearings that ensure a smooth and secure closure.
All in all, the new Tudor Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt is a subtle but important update of a classic for the brand. It doesn’t change much visually, which is, at least for us, the right way to build a solid collection that will last. Technically speaking, and regarding wearing comfort, the BB58 is now better than ever. Let’s now hope for a blue version to join the collection and complete the range. Prices for the Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt Master Chronometer are EUR 4,770 and EUR 4,880 for the 3-link and 5-link steel bracelet references, respectively, and EUR 4,540 with a rubber strap, identical to the Burgundy versions. It is available now from the brand’s boutiques and retailers. For more details, please visit www.tudorwatch.com.
