Relaunched in 2019, the Seiko 5 Sport range has grown significantly over the years, to the point where it could become a brand in its own right. Based on a concept of affordability and durability dating back to the 1960s, it started with the inaugural SKX-inspired, dive-oriented models and has expanded to include dozens of funky editions (Pepsi, Mooneyes, Pink Panther) and almost every style of sports watch possible, from pilot models to GMTs or field watches. Talking about field style, the brand already has classic versions, smaller editions and GMT models in stock. And it now adds a quartet of watches, the HDB006, HDB007, HDB008 and HDB009, featuring a compass bezel and luminous indexes.

Just like Prospex carries the famed Alpinist models, field watches ready for outdoor adventures and, for most of them, equipped with a compass bezel, it is time now for the accessible 5 Sport Series to embrace the same style. Simple, reliable, no-nonsense watches made for the great escape, and now equipped with a new rotating bezel to help navigation. This is the whole idea with these new Seiko 5 Sports Field Series with a compass bezel.

This new quartet of models are all technically identical but differs quite a bit regarding the overall execution. Basically 2 duos of watches with a fairly distinct personality, all share the same stainless steel case measuring a reasonable 41mm diameter with a thickness of 13.2mm. The lug-to-lug is measured at 48.5mm (not the smallest, but still acceptable), and the lug width is a practical 20mm, making it easy to source your own preferred strap. As always with 5 Sport models, these new Field Series watches are equipped with a Hardlex crystal, a mineral glass see-through caseback, a push-pull crown and are water-resistant to a comfortable 100m.

One of the two main novelties is what frames the dial: a classic of Seiko, the compass bezel. This bidirectional bezel is made of steel with a diamond-shaped knurled pattern on the side, which should offer great grip. Depending on the edition, the bezel is either classic brushed steel (HDB006 and HDB007 with steel bracelet) or coated in brown or black for the HDB008 and HDB009 editions. A lumed pearl marks the north.

As for the dials, 4 colours are available. Two models, the HDB006 and HDB007 with steel bracelets, play on the safe side with either a glossy black or white dial, resulting in two sleek, timeless looks. The two other editions, the HDB008 and HDB009, rely on an adventure theme and earthy tones, with respectively a green dial (black bezel) or a brown dial (matching bezel). Another important and practical addition concerns the Arabic numerals, which are here coated in LumiBrite – something that previous Seiko 5 Sport Field watches didn’t have, as only the square hour markers were lumed. The rest of the dial is classic, with an additional 13-24-hour scale in the centre and a day-date complication at 3 o’clock.

Inside the case is one of the most famous movements of Seiko, the tried-and-tested Calibre 4R36. This automatic movement is known to be simple and robust. It runs at a 3Hz frequency and stores about 41 hours of power reserve.

Worn on a 3-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp – HDB006 and HDB007 – or nylon straps (green or brown) with a leather lining and a pin buckle – HDB008 and HDB009 – the Seiko 5 Sports Field Series with compass bezel will be available worldwide in June 2026, at EUR 390 on a strap and EUR 410 on a steel bracelet.
