A second Defy Extreme E Special Edition released on the occasion of the Island X Prix in Sardegna
Watchmaker Zenith is the official timekeeper and a founding partner of Extreme E, the off-road racing series using electric SUVs in remote parts of the world. Among the specificities of the competition, all racing locations are chosen to raise awareness for some aspects of climate change. The series also promotes gender equality in motorsport by mandating that all teams consist of a female and a male driver who share equal driving duties. Following the inaugural Desert X Prix, the brand unveils its second Defy Extreme E Special Edition in the frame of the Island X Prix in Sardegna, based on the brand’s bold and rugged evolution of its sports watch.
As its name suggests, the bold and ultra-technical Zenith Defy Extreme is a testosterone-fed version of the brand’s luxury sports watch. Released in the frame of the Island X Prix, the latest iteration of the model is accented in vivid orange, the back-to-back races’ official colour. The bold, angular 45mm case is presented in lightweight carbon fibre with micro-blasted titanium elements. It is water-resistant to 200m and is equipped with a screw-down crown. It is based on the classic Defy Extreme Carbon Fibre here.
The Zenith Defy Extreme E Island X Prix Special Edition is powered by the automatic El Primero 9004 calibre. The specificity of this movement is that it relies on two time-keeping bases. One regulator is used for the indication of the time and beats at 36,000 vibrations/hour or 5Hz frequency, with 50 hours of power reserve. The chronograph is an independent mechanism running at an ultra-fast 360,000 vibrations/hour of 50Hz. It allows to time events down to the 1/100th of a second with a central hand that makes a complete rotation of the dial in one second. However, this high-frequency, power-hungry mechanism required the use of a dedicated gear train and barrel. The movement is partially visible through the sapphire dial as well as through the exhibition back emblazoned with the Island X Prix logo.
The Zenith Defy Extreme is fitted with a practical interchangeability system that allows you to change the strap and the personality of the watch in seconds. It is delivered with three straps: an orange Velcro strap made with parts of Continental recycled tires, a black Velcro strap and a black rubber strap. The watch is packaged in a sturdy waterproof case incorporating recycled and upcycled material. It is released in a limited edition of 20 pieces only available at Zenith physical and online boutiques. The price is set at CHF 26,900.
