The Urban Jürgensen UJ-2, the Brand’s Sophisticated Time-Only Watch

When Urban Jürgensen returned under the stewardship of Kari Voutilainen and Alex Rosenfield, the inaugural collection naturally attracted attention with the spectacular UJ-1 Tourbillon and the sophisticated UJ-3 Perpetual Calendar. Yet, of the three models, it is perhaps the UJ-2 that best explains what the revived manufacture is looking to achieve. The UJ-2, to put it simply, is a watch with small seconds and a power reserve indicator, but nothing about it is simple. The restrained appearance hides a movement with one of watchmaking’s most elegant escapements, and every visible element reflects the uncompromising approach that defines Urban Jürgensen’s new era.

The Case

Available in platinum or 5N rose gold, the case, measuring 39mm in diameter and 10.9mm thick, remains discreet despite its precious metal construction. The design reveals the influence of Kari Voutilainen, yet it avoids becoming a Voutilainen watch wearing another name – unlike some of the past models. The stepped bezel alternates polished and satin finishes, and the gently brushed case middle adds subtle contrast. The most distinctive feature remains the lugs. They appear sharp and architectural at first, but in fact are reinterpretations of Urban Jürgensen’s historic teardrop lugs, rotated and modernised. The large, fluted crown is at 3 o’clock. The caseback is decorated with circular Grain d’orge guilloché framing the sapphire crystal.

The silver guillochÉ Dial

The dial introduces a carefully balanced asymmetry. The hour and minutes hands are positioned slightly above the geometric centre of the dial (though perfectly centred within the chapter ring), allowing the oversized small seconds display to occupy a wide position at roughly 5 o’clock. A power reserve indicator is at noon, a common feature across all three inaugural UJ models.

Like the finest historical chronometers, the dial is manufactured from solid silver before galvanic treatment. Multiple hand-guilloché patterns bring remarkable depth. Circular Grain d’orge decorates the outer section, while the large-sized subregister features Clous de Paris. The smooth central area provides welcome visual relief, with Roman numerals marking the hours along its periphery.

Depending on the chosen variant, the applied precious metal chapter rings are executed in silver or matching rose gold, paired with Urban Jürgensen’s elegant flame-blued or precious-metal open-tip hands. The platinum case can be paired with either a silver or a blue dial, while the rose gold case is offered with matching silver or deep blue dials. The silver dial in rose gold is the most classic combination.

The Movement and its Double Wheel Natural Escapement

The dials are lovely, but it’s the back of the watch that reveals the real story. The manually wound calibre UJ-2 evokes the construction of traditional pocket watches, with wide spacing between the wheels, large bridges and expansive negative space. It feels historical but in no way nostalgic. The movement is new, designed as the mechanical foundation for future Urban Jürgensen complications – and present ones too, as it is the base for the UJ-3 Perpetual Calendar. Measuring 32mm across and 5.5mm thick, it runs at 18,000 vibrations/hour and delivers approximately 52 hours of power reserve from a single barrel.

The highlight is the double wheel natural escapement, borrowed from Voutilainen’s Vingt-8 movements. Conceived by Abraham-Louis Breguet, later refined by Derek Pratt, George Daniels, and more recently by Kari Voutilainen and Laurent Ferrier, the natural escapement has long been considered one of watchmaking’s most satisfying solutions. It delivers direct impulses to the balance through two escape wheels, reducing energy loss and requiring almost no lubrication at the impulse surfaces.

Urban Jürgensen estimates roughly 30% greater efficiency than a conventional Swiss lever escapement, but perhaps more importantly, the system aligns perfectly with the manufacturer’s philosophy. It is more difficult to produce, assemble and regulate, yet delivers its advantages through refinement. The regulating organ continues this traditional approach with a large free-sprung balance, Phillips overcoil, Grossmann inner curve and fixed stud arrangement.

The Finishes

The bridges receive a warm rose gold plating over finely textured grenage surfaces, while broad hand-polished domed bevels follow every edge. The mainplate is decorated with perlage, wheels receive satin polishing with carefully chamfered spokes, and even the screw heads are mirror polished.

Thoughts, availability & Price

The UJ-2 is an exercise in refinement, not intended to impress with complications. Among the three inaugural Urban Jürgensen watches, the UJ-1 naturally steals the show with its remarkable reinterpretation of Derek Pratt’s Oval pocket watch. The UJ-3 demonstrates how a perpetual calendar can be integrated into the same architecture. The UJ-2, however, may ultimately prove to be the most revealing watch in the collection, asking a simple question: how perfect can a simple watch become? Looking at what Urban Jürgensen has achieved here, the answer is close. Even though it comes at a non-negligible cost.
