For 2025, TAG Heuer feels it’s time for a massive overhaul of its racing-inspired Formula 1 collection, and here we are. Plus, it’s a timely refresh as well, as it has been just announced that TAG Heuer, as part of the LVMH Group, is the official timekeeper for the FIA Formula 1 World Championship again! The first watch, or watches rather, that put things in motion is this all-new Formula 1 Chronograph. We’re talking about new shapes, new materials, new colours and so on. Four watches are released in one go, with a colourful Oracle Red Bull Racing Edition thrown in the mix for good measure!

TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 collection was first introduced in 1986 with colourful quartz-powered watches taking inspiration from the world of motorsports. it was, in fact, the first entirely new collection after the takeover of the Heuer watchmaking company by Technique d’Avant-Garde, now the TAG in TAG Heuer. Since racing has been in the DNA of both companies for ages, it was only natural that the first new range would encapsulate that shared passion!

Back then, plenty of brands were still dealing with the aftermath of the quartz crisis in the late 1970s. By the early 1980s, however, many brands, including TAG Heuer, had adopted the new tech. The Formula 1 paired bold colours and new materials, such as rubber and resin, with quartz movements, and by the end of the decade, the first Formula 1 Chronograph was introduced. Things started to gain more and more traction in the mid 1990s, most notably thanks to the partnership with legendary racing driver Ayrton Senna. The F1 ace could be seen wearing a whole range of TAG Heuer Formula 1 watches, both on and off track. After a brief hiatus between 2000 and 2004, the Formula 1 collection was updated once more in 2015, as it took on the look of the Autavia.

Now, though, the collection has been restyled from top to bottom. The new Formula 1 has a shaped grade 2 titanium case measuring 44mm across and 14.1mm in height. That sounds like a large watch, and it pretty much is, but the integrated design keeps the lug-to-lug size pretty much in check at 47.3mm. In fact, when checking the specs of the new F1, it’s actually shorter from end to end and a millimetre slimmer overall. The new design has a very contemporary look and feel, topped by a fixed tachymeter bezel with a colour lining separating it from the case. Depending on the model, the case is either in bare titanium or finished with a black DLC coating.

TAG Heuer keeps things race-oriented with a predominantly black colour scheme, highlighted with red and light blue accents. The stand-out model is the Oracle Red Bull Racing Edition, which adopts the team’s deep blue, red and yellow colours. This is also the only one with a chequered pattern on the blue dial instead of a finely grained black one and a bezel insert in carbon as opposed to aluminium. The caseback decoration and the rubber strap differ, but we’re getting ahead of things.

Inspiration for the Formula 1 comes from the F1 cars that will roar back into action on March 14th for the season opener in Australia. Lines from the front wings, the nose section, the side pods, and so on are carried over in the case profile, as well as the shape of the pushers, the hour markers, and so on. The reshaped crown and pushers are also better integrated into the case design. There’s a sapphire crystal on top, with a solid caseback on the reverse side decorated with a chequered flag section. In the Oracle RBR edition, the team’s logo can also be seen.

On the technical side of things, Formula 1 always pushes forward in the pursuit of performance. TAG Heuer, though, opts for reliability by incorporating the brand’s Calibre 16 automatic chronograph. Based on the Sellita SW510, it runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and can hold up to 42 hours of fuel in the tank (pardon the pun). The Calibre 16 displays elapsed time through a coloured central chronograph seconds hand, with a 30-minute sub-dial at noon and a 12-hour counter at 6′. The sub-dial at 9′ is designated for the running seconds.

The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 collection comes on an integrated black, red or Oracle Red Bull Racing blue rubber strap with a pin buckle. A nice finishing touch is the coloured line on the edge to tie it into the colours on the dial and hands, the crown and the spacer between the bezel and the case. Prices are CHF 4,300 for the bare titanium model, CHF 4,600 for the black DLC-coated ones, and CHF 5,300 for the Oracle Red Bull Racing Edition. That means it’s not exactly cheap, but the overhaul pushes the Formula 1 into a new and contemporary direction and, as such, has a lot going for itself. It gets a more stand-out design, which feels like a very good step for the collection as a whole. More colours will surely follow, and we expect some Senna-themed special editions to be introduced as well. With it, the F1’s future sure looks bright!
