Speake-Marin One&Two Academic Full Moon

Speake-Marin adds a moon phase indication to its One&Two collection.

The Speake-Marin One&Two collection was launched just two years ago. First, the brand’s signature case, the Piccadilly, got a facelift – a tasteful redesign conducted with Eric Giroud. Secondly, the movements inside are worth a look. In addition to the Small Seconds model and its Openworked development, the brand added a GMT version at the SIHH 2019 and unveiled an astronomical watch, the Speake-Marin One&Two Academic Full Moon.

The Speake-Marin One&Two collection is built around an interesting family of micro-rotor calibres (the SMA family), with an original small seconds counter placed between 1 and 2 o’clock. Since 2015, the brand has initiated a bold movement strategy to develop proprietary calibres, assembled in the Neuchatel region. The result is inherently Speake-Marin, combining British elegance, controlled eccentricity, and classic Swiss Haute Horlogerie.

Presented at the SIHH 2019, the Speake-Marin One&Two Academic Full Moon uses the same ingredients. It was presented alongside a second One&Two featuring a small complication, the Openworked Dual time. The Full Moon model is powered by a new movement from the SMA series showing a large moon phase indication, placed in the centre of a silvery white dial. The moon is displayed at 7h30, creating a counterpoint to the small seconds.

The two moons waxing and waning across the large window appear in different colours, orange or silver. Their realistic depiction shows finely engraved details of the moon’s surface. Roman numerals are carved into the dial. The different indications and finishes create an interesting sense of depth. The hours and minutes are indicated by the classic Speake-Marin spade/whip hands.

Turning the watch over, you can appreciate the beautifully decorated finishes of the calibre SMA03. The dark-coated bridges feature thin Geneva stripes and bevelled angles. The micro-rotor is integrated under the brand’s hallmark watchmaking topping tool. The SMA calibre operates at 4Hz and boasts a comfortable 52-hour power reserve. The moon phase indication advances every day at 7h30 pm.

The Speake-Marin One&Two Full Moon comes in either a 38mm or a 42mm 18k pink gold case – meaning that you’ll be able to find the right case size depending on your wrist and tastes. The watch is worn on a brown suede leather strap and gold pin buckle. Price is set at CHF 22,000 for the 38mm version and CHF 24,000 for the 42mm version.
