Rolex to Release its Second Authorized Book “Oyster Perpetual Datejust – A Watch that Made History”
Following Nicholas Foulkes' take on the Submariner, the author now look at The Crown's most sold watch.
Exactly one year ago, Rolex, with the help of author Nicholas Foulkes and publisher Wallpaper, took us by surprise when releasing the first-ever Crown-authorised book, The History of the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Watch. While such initiatives have been done on multiple occasions by other brands, a historical book receiving the stamp of approval of Rolex was quite unexpected, given that the brand is a rather discreet company that has hardly ever communicated its history and the origins and evolution of its emblematic models. But just like with its recent watch releases, Rolex is changing and opening up to the world of enthusiasts. Case in point, here’s the second Rolex authorised, still written by Foulkes, Oyster Perpetual Datejust – A Watch that Made History.

Following an inaugural opus covering the history of the emblematic Submariner dive watch (maybe not in the way some wanted it to be…), Rolex once again partners with publisher Wallpaper and the same author as before – Nicholas Foulkes – to release a historical overview of its inaugural waterproof, self-winding chronometer wristwatch, complete with a date window at 3 o’clock, the all-time classic Oyster Perpetual Datejust. According to the pitch, “Foulkes chronicles the remarkable story behind the creation of what Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf described, at its launch in 1945, as a timepiece that encapsulates every discovery made to date.”

In the same vein as the first opus about the Submariner, Oyster Perpetual Datejust – A Watch that Made History isn’t a technical overview listing the references in a chronological order, or exploring the tiniest of differences between the multiple generations of Datejust watches. This 224-page book will surely look back at the origins of the collection, but adds stories and features numerous Rolex Testimonees, putting the light on the brand’s partnerships with top athletes and pre-eminent figures from the arts world.

Available exclusively from Wallpaper Store for pre-order from 9 September and to buy from 29 September, Oyster Perpetual Datejust – A Watch that Made History is published in English and in French, and priced at GBP 100 or EUR 125. The book will also be available in-store at Official Rolex Retailers worldwide from October, and a selection of independent bookshops and retailers. For more details, please consult www.wallpaper.com.
