The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Automatic x Wristcheck
A fresh blue treatment for Piaget’s radically thin Altiplano Ultimate Automatic, created with new-generation collector platform Wristcheck.
While a recurring thing for the watch industry in recent years, collaborations are relatively rare at Piaget, especially for limited-edition pieces tied to external partners. Yet strengthening one’s position in the markets doesn’t hurt, and the brand now joins forces with Wristcheck, a Hong Kong-based platform founded by Austen Chu in 2020, for a new interpretation of one of its ambitious watches, the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic. Limited to 30 pieces, this edition offers Piaget’s familiar ultra-thin piece with Wristcheck’s signature blue accents, bringing a fresh look to the radical calibre 910P.
Let’s praise Wristcheck for choosing one of the most experimental versions in the collection and not selecting a conventional Altiplano model. Introduced in 2018, the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic 910P is one of the thinnest automatic watches ever produced, measuring 4.3mm in total thickness (only surpassed by the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic, at 3.95mm). Also, the model reflects Piaget’s long-standing mastery of ultra-thin watchmaking, since the groundbreaking 9P and 12P calibres of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The white gold 41mm case keeps the unconventional construction of the standard 910P; the movement and case are conceived as one, with the caseback serving as the mainplate. This design eliminates an entire structural layer as opposed to a standard watch construction, allowing Piaget to achieve its remarkable thinness and fully expose the mechanics on the dial side.
The watch remains unmistakably an Altiplano Ultimate Automatic, with its openworked layout revealing much of the 238-component movement. Wristcheck’s intervention comes through light blue accents, a colour strongly associated with the platform and the brand. The wide chapter ring on the off-centred hour and minute display appears in deep blue, matched by blue screws and a blue-coated peripheral rotor, in 22k gold for sufficient mass and winding efficiency.
The otherwise monochromatic white-gold and grey calibre 910P is one of the most interesting ultra-thin automatic movements currently in production. The bridges, some measuring just fractions of a millimetre in thickness, are positioned on the dial side and serve a practical role by protecting the hands from accidental pressure on the sapphire crystal. Finishing includes satin-brushed and sandblasted surfaces, chamfered bridges and circular satin-finished wheels. The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations/hour and provides approximately 50 hours of power reserve.
The watch is worn on a deep blue calfskin strap selected by Wristcheck and finished with matching blue stitching. The caseback features both the Piaget crest and the Wristcheck logo, engraved.
The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Automatic x Wristcheck is released as a limited edition of 30 pieces. Price upon request. For more details, please visit piaget.com and wristcheck.com.
