After Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, Oris brings Disney’s The Muppets to the stage for a third collaboration. This time, the spotlight is on The Great Gonzo, the stuntman-showman whose unconventional personality seems perfectly matched to the bold and highly technical ProPilot X collection.

The new ProPilot X Gonzo Edition is based on the brand’s ProPilot X Calibre 115, its large and architectural model powered by one of Oris’s most distinctive in-house movements. The multi-piece titanium case measures 44mm in diameter, 12.6mm thick and 52mm from lug to lug. As with the standard model, its angular design, faceted surfaces and integrated titanium bracelet give the watch a very contemporary appearance. Water-resistance is 100m.

The skeletonised dial is where the collaboration is evident. Its colours move from blue to red and yellow, inspired by Gonzo’s appearance and colourful wardrobe. The chapter ring is also laser-textured, appearing metallic at some moments and displaying different colours at others.

The non-linear power reserve display at 3 o’clock, one of the defining features of Calibre 115, here receives a Gonzo-like treatment. The indicator hand is a chilli pepper, recalling one of the character’s well-known shirts (often worn with a polka-dot tie and a checkered jacket), and the scale measures the movement’s 10-day autonomy in “GREAT” days.

The real party trick, however, is the open barrel at 12 o’clock. Oris has laser-etched tiny markings onto the edge of the 1.8-metre mainspring. As the watch is wound and the coils draw closer together, these markings align to reveal Gonzo’s smiling face. As the mainspring unwinds, the image disappears again.

The hand-wound Calibre 115 retains its 240-hour power reserve and skeletonised construction, making this one of Oris’s most mechanically ambitious Muppets editions so far. The ProPilot X Gonzo Edition multi-piece titanium bracelet is closed with an Oris-developed folding clasp. The watch is delivered in a special wooden presentation box and priced at CHF 8,500. 1. Now where is that guy that was talking about watch design yesterday? I like Oris, but not this. Looks like a Norqain, or something Chris Ward would do.
