For many enthusiasts, these compact new versions may well be the sweet spot of the Ahoi collection.

Nomos released the Ahoi Neomatik Sand and Sky in 2023, adding a fresh, playful touch to the brand’s sporty collection. Combining the good specs of the Ahoi line with colours inspired by nature, they stood apart from the more restrained palette usually associated with the Glashütte manufacture. This year, Nomos offers a pair of smaller references that retain the same easy-going character while introducing more compact proportions and a cleaner, no-date display, with the Ahoi Neomatik Sand and Sky 36.

The new Ahoi Neomatik Sand and Ahoi Neomatik Sky measure, as you’ve guessed from their name, 36.3mm in diameter, a notable reduction from the 38.5mm case of the earlier models. Despite their reduced size, these remain quite capable sports watches. The stainless steel case retains the familiar Ahoi design, a sportier version of the emblematic Tangente, featuring a screw-down crown, integrated crown guards, and water resistance to 200m. This makes the watches suitable for swimming, watersports, and even recreational diving. Thickness remains restrained at just over 9mm. A domed sapphire crystal with AR coating on both sides protects the dial. The caseback is secured by six screws; both solid and display (sapphire crystal) options are available.

The Sand model features a warm, lightly textured beige-toned dial with luminous hour markers adjacent to the indices. The recessed subdial at 6 o’clock gets the signature orange seconds hand. The Sky version with a light blue dial also comes with white Super-LumiNova markers along the minutes track and an orange seconds hand. Without the date window, positioned at 3 o’clock on larger versions, both displays look cleaner and more balanced than before. Legibility remains good, thanks to rhodium-plated hands with luminous inserts and clearly defined indices.

Powering both models is the manufacture calibre DUW 3001, Nomos’ thin automatic movement measuring 3.2mm in height. Equipped with the brand’s proprietary Swing System escapement, the movement operates at 21,600 vibrations/hour and delivers a power reserve of up to 43 hours. Through the display back, owners can admire classic Glashütte finishing, including ribbing, perlage, tempered blue screws and the three-quarter plate construction.

The watches are worn on waterproof woven textile straps, in light grey for the Sand and blue-black for the Sky. The straps are closed with a pin buckle, and a steel bracelet is also available as an option. The price is EUR 3,560 or USD 4,540, with a sapphire caseback. 1. Oh man…those are both big time winners for me, but if I spring for one, it’ll be the Sand. The subtle texture on the dial disrupts mirror-like reflection so helps contrast/legibility, and makes it more interesting. And that case size should be great; I have the 36.4 Ludwig for Doctors Without Borders, so basically same size, and it sits like a dream.
