Inspired by Italian expertise in lightweight car construction, the Labormatic gets a racier and sportier titanium chassis.
Officially launched just two years ago, Gagà Laboratorio is a spin-off of the longstanding Italian luxury designer watchmaker Gagà Milano. The inaugural Labormatic line encapsulates the brand’s highly creative mechanical personality, underscored by 1950s Italian industrial design codes and powered by Swiss La Joux-Perret movements. Instead of traditional hands, the Labormatic displays the digital hours in an aperture, with minutes in the centre and a revolving disc for the running seconds. During Geneva Watch Days, Gagà Laboratorio presents the Labormatic Superleggero, a lightweight version in grade 5 titanium with a racier, sportier personality inspired by Italy’s longstanding expertise in lightweight construction, especially in sectors like coachbuilding, racing machines and performance cars.
The creative spirit behind the Labormatic is Mo Coppoletta, the acclaimed tattoo artist who teamed up with founder Ruben Tomella to define the brand’s distinctive personality. The new Labormatic Superleggero retains the flamboyant 42mm x 13.3mm case construction of earlier models, with its dramatic flared lugs, its crown at noon and rotund bezel. However, the matte sandblasted titanium gives the watch a sportier appeal. To highlight the unusual shape of the stepped lugs, the top surface is sandblasted, but the bottom lug attached to the case middle is brushed. The crown, with its rounded rivets, features a grey cabochon that matches the grey titanium case.
While the time indications on the dial retain their positions, the dial has been opened up. Four arched windows – not including the smaller aperture at noon for the hours – with laser-engraved sapphire crystals protected by grilles reveal sections of the hours disc. Now featuring bright yellow numerals, the even numbers are set against a dotted black-and-white background. A fun touch, each numeral is flanked by a smaller version on the left and the preceding numeral on the right. The minutes are displayed on a greyish-blue disc with a series of spokes, indicated by a rotating yellow hand, and the seconds spin on a matte grey cap in the centre.
The porthole on the caseback offers a view of the automatic G-100 La Joux-Perret movement, featuring a customised openworked, charcoal-coated Gagà Laboratorio rotor. Beating at 28,800 vph, the movement delivers a comfortable 68 hours of power reserve.
The Labormatic Superleggero is paired with a grey technical elastic fabric strap. It is a limited edition of 100 pieces and retails for CHF 4,700 (excl. VAT). It will be available online at gagalaboratorio.com and at selected retail partners.
