New Green and Blue Dials for the Hamilton Khaki Field Power Reserve 40mm

Hamilton, once one of the largest American watchmakers, has a long tradition of accessible, robust field watches and military-inspired timepieces, a style that’s been crucial for the brand with its Khaki Field Collection. While most of the models are modelled after the mid-20th-century Hamilton Hacked watches, some editions took the brief at face value, while some, on the contrary, took the liberty to modernise the concept, with automatic movements, different materials or larger cases. Or, as is the case today, by adding a power reserve display. Following the classic black and white editions released last year, Hamilton now adds green and blue dials to its Khaki Field Power Reserve 40mm collection. 

While the classic Khaki Field Mechanical (hand-wound) is available in 38mm and 42mm cases, not to mention the recent US limited edition Khaki Field Mechanical 250 with a very cool 36mm case, the Khaki Field Power Reserve sits in between with a 40mm case, a still-reasonable sub-12mm thickness and a lug-to-lug measurement of 48mm – it is something to always take into account with this collection; the lugs are fairly long. The case is made of stainless steel, featuring a fully sandblasted finish that lends it a distinctive military, anti-reflective style and a clear tool watch character. The caseback is screwed and solid steel, while the dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with AR coating. The water-resistance is rated at a comfortable 100m.

In addition to the black and white versions released last year, Hamilton introduces two new colours to the collection, classics of the Khaki Field range. First is a matte olive green dial that perfectly fits the military-styled theme. The second option is a fresher, more modern matte mid-blue version, for a more urban, less hardcore field inspiration. On both editions, the hands and the triangular hour markers are filled with Old Radium Super-LumiNova, while the classic military elements of the collection have been respected: large Arabic numerals for the hours, a simple but clear minute track and an additional 13-24 hour track sits in the middle of the dial.

Of course, the most distinctive element of this Khaki Field Power Reserve collection has been kept: a power reserve indicator in the shape of a gauge at 9 o’clock, with F (full) and E (empty) markings in red, as well as a small triangular hand with lume to match the rest of the handset. A surprising complication on a field watch, but one that remains practical in the context of a hand-wound mechanical piece.

Inside the case is the Hamilton calibre H-23, a development made by ETA on the basis of its ubiquitous Powermatic 80. In this case, we’re talking about an evolution of the ETA 2801-2, the hand-wound variant of the ETA 2824-2, with the addition of a power reserve indicator. The movement runs at a 3Hz frequency, boasts a solid 80h power reserve and features a magnetic resistant Nivachron balance spring.

Each version of the Hamilton Khaki Field Power Reserve 40mm is available on a NATO textile strap with leather loops, in green or blue. The models retail for CHF 765 or EUR 915.
