With summer just around the corner, many of us switch our more formal dress watches for something more suitable for warmer temperatures, travelling and outdoor activities. The ideal summer wrist companion combines water-resistance with robustness and, why not, a splash of colour. The Certina DS Action Diver fits the bill to a tee, and the 38mm edition returns in time for the warm weather in lightweight titanium cases with fun colourful accents and the rock-solid credentials associated with the DS family.

Any Certina watch with DS in its name is the descendant of the brand’s innovative Double Security system, introduced in 1959. By incorporating a series of O-seal rings on the stem and crown and reinforcing the caseback, Certina’s DS system protected the movement from external aggressions. Adapted and updated over the years to reflect the latest technical standards, any watch bearing the DS acronym is a guarantee of resilience.

The three new references come in the most compact 38mm case size that was beefed up last year with enhanced DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance features to match the robustness of its 43mm and 40.5mm counterparts. After all, the last thing you want to worry about is scratching your watch, accidentally dropping it, bashing it or ending up in a swimming pool.

Water-resistant to depths of 300 metres and ISO 6425 certified, the case of the Diver has been beefed up with an ultra-thin metal plate between the dial and movement to prevent the dial from deforming or slipping in the event of a serious blow. The scratch-resistant, anti-reflective sapphire crystal has been reinforced and is slightly domed to distribute shock waves, and the movement is further protected by a ring-shaped nut. As you would expect from this competent deep diver, the crown is screwed down and protected by guards, and the caseback sealed.

Presented in lightweight yet resilient 38mm grade 2 titanium cases with a thickness of 13.2mm, the new models feature scratch-resistant ceramic inserts in the bezel that will not fade in the sunlight. The most colourful model is the one Xavier photographed with an electric blue ceramic bezel and dial with bright orange Super-LumiNova applied to the indices and hands. The second reference combines its dark grey ceramic bezel and dial with a splash of turquoise Super-LumiNova, while the third pairs its black ceramic insert and dial with a powerful burst of pink Super-LumiNova.

Protected by the sealed caseback with the turtle logo is the robust Powermatic 80, Swatch Group’s automatic tractor with an antimagnetic Nivachron balance spring and a long 80-hour power reserve. All three models come with brushed titanium bracelets with a quick-release system and a deployant clasp with two push buttons and a diver’s extension.

Retailing for CHF 925 / GBP 925 / USD 1,100, the new Certina DS Action Diver 38mm Summer Editions offer great value for the money. More information at certina.com.
