The new Louis Erard Le Régulateur Gravé Bleu

The regulator and sector dial meet again on a new blue reference with engraved silver tracks.

Just four months after Louis Erard unveiled its handsome Régulateur Gravé with a black dial, the brand returns with a blue dial. The idea of blending the brand’s classic regulator layout with a sector dial was spot-on; however, adding traditional engraving techniques to the mix was an inspired choice. Joining the permanent and newly created Noirmont Métiers d’Art sub-family, it’s going to be a tough choice choosing which of the two looks best.

The new blue reference next to last year’s black version – both are part of the permanent collection

In the signature design language of the Régulateur, the minutes are the protagonists and featured on the periphery, while the hours and seconds are hosted inside two separate sub-dials at noon and 6 o’clock, respectively. Adding features of a sector dial to the layout produces a more technical look. Popularised in the 1930s, sector dials were designed to enhance legibility with their clearly defined dial segments and geometric divisions. Also known as scientific or railroad dials, a sector dial enhances precision time readings and adds a great vintage touch to contemporary watches.

Identical in size, the two sub-dials for the hours and seconds are stacked vertically in the centre. The all-important minutes track indicated by the central hand is featured on the periphery with a slim precision railroad track and a wider track with 5-minute markings. Bringing traditional métiers d’art techniques to a broader audience, Louis Erard has engraved all the displays on the dial and filled them with a contrasting silver colour (rhodium-plated) for heightened contrast. All the indications rely on the brand’s signature fir tree-shaped hands.

The polished stainless steel case has a 39mm diameter, a 12.82 thickness, a 45.9mm lug-to-lug and a depth rating of 50 metres. It is topped with a domed sapphire crystal and display caseback revealing the Sellita SW266-1 élaboré-grade automatic with a 38h power reserve and a bespoke rotor.

The new blue dial is paired with a light grey calfskin strap and a polished steel pin buckle. The watch retails for CHF 2,900 (excl. tax) and is part of the permanent collection. More information at louiserard.com.
