The Longines Legend Diver (LLD) is one of the important watches in the brand’s catalogue. First introduced in 1959, the original ref. 7042 defined the brand’s approach to underwater instruments: a bold 42mm EPSA compressor case, dual crowns, and an internal rotating bezel. It was a purposeful tool, but also one with a certain elegance, something that would become a signature of the collection.

Context

When Longines revived the Legend Diver in 2007, it became one of the most successful heritage reissues on the market, created using a simple and effective formula: faithful design, modern construction (no longer a proper compressor, a compressor-style 42mm case), and accessible pricing. Over time, the collection evolved, first with the addition of a date function to the 42mm model in 2009, then through multiple dial variations, case materials, and even a smaller 36mm format.

In 2023, Longines launched a new 39mm no-date version, much praised for its proportions and cleaner execution, but also retired the 42mm black-dialled model, to bring more colour to the new 39mm series a year later. Yet, for many enthusiasts, the original 42mm no-date format, the one that defined the Legend Diver in the first place, was missing. Now, Longines brings that full-size concept back: meet the updated, refined, and technically improved Legend Diver 59.

The return of the 42mm Legend Diver

The new Legend Diver 59 reintroduces the classic 42mm case, measuring 12.85mm thick with a 50.1mm lug-to-lug. The proportions keep the original spirit, broad, assertive, and the signature dual crowns are, of course, present. The crown at 2 o’clock operates the internal bidirectional bezel; the lower is for winding and time-setting. Both are screw-down for effective sealing. The original 1959 model relied on a true EPSA compressor case; modern iterations use a conventional construction but retain the look and appeal.

The watch is certified to ISO 6425 standards, with water resistance rated to 300m and tested beyond that. A domed, box-style sapphire crystal tops the case, and the screw-down caseback features the embossed diver emblem, a familiar element across the collection. The caseback is slightly angled for improved ergonomics.

Previous 42mm versions often featured glossy lacquered dials, appealing but reflective. The Legend Diver 59 comes with a lightly grained black dial, a more utilitarian choice for better legibility. The layout is classic, with Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, elongated markers and a peripheral minutes track. The hands and numerals are sandblasted to achieve a matte texture that reduces glare. All elements are filled with a light “old radium” Super-LumiNova.

The absence of a date window is significant. After years of mixed reception to date-equipped versions, this return to a no-date configuration restores the symmetry and purity of the original design.

Like many recent Heritage Legend Diver 39 references, the new Legend Diver 59 is powered by the latest evolution of Longines’ automatic, COSC-certified calibre L888.6 (based on ETA A31.L11 and exclusive to Longines). Beating at 25,200 vibrations/hour, it delivers a 72-hour power reserve and incorporates a silicon balance spring for improved resistance to magnetism (ISO 764 compliant).

Availability & Price

The Longines Legend Diver 59 is worn on a steel Milanese mesh bracelet closed with a double-folding clasp and featuring a micro-adjustment system, an improvement over earlier bracelets. The mesh construction improves comfort and flexibility while maintaining a period-correct look. Additionally, a black rubber strap with a diver’s pin buckle is included. The new Legend Diver 59 is now available for purchase at CHF 3,400 or EUR 4,000. For more information, please visit longines.com.
