The Gimbutis Avantgarde Pinecone Moon Face

An intriguing and original pattern inspired by pinecones to welcome a moon phase indicator.

| By Rebecca Doulton | 2 min read |

The theme of the jewellery and watches produced by Romas Gimbutis’ Geneva-based brand revolves entirely around the natural beauty of pinecones – and you’d be surprised by how far the anatomy of a pinecone can be stretched in the line-up of men’s and women’s watches. The latest mechanical Pinecone watch from the Avantgarde family is this Moon Face in red gold with a black PVD coating and a photorealistic engraving of the Moon.

The most striking feature of the Avantgarde collection is the curving tonneau-shaped case decorated with the distinctive scales of pinecones. With a width of 38.46mm, a length of 43.04mm and a height of 12.39mm, almost the entirety of the red gold case is sheathed with a series of 3D pyramids in black PVD that evoke the cones of a conifer. Varying in size, the dynamic pinecone motif follows the curved ergonomic and tapering contours of the barrel-shaped case. The red gold crown is also decorated with a series of pyramids coated in black PVD. It’s worth mentioning that this model is also available in rose and white gold cases without black PVD.

Even the dial gets the black PVD pinecone treatment and reveals an intricate pattern of pyramid-shaped clusters that rise and fall and increase in size from the centre to the periphery, giving it a pronounced sense of dynamism and depth. A raised black flange with white hour markers and golden 5-minute markers is indicated by the short golden hour and minute hands treated with white Super-LumiNova.

Occupying a large aperture at 6 o’clock is the moon phase indicator. Unlike traditional moon phase indicators that tend to hide the second moon, both moons are revealed simultaneously thanks to a tinted sapphire crystal. Floating in a dark star-studded evening sky, the surface of the golden moons is realistic and engraved based on a real-life picture of the Moon.

The Swiss Made indication on the dial refers to the proprietary automatic RG19 calibre confected for the brand by Télôs Watch SA, a high-end movement designer/produced based in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The 261-part movement beats at 4Hz/ 28,800vph, and the twin barrels deliver a comfortable power reserve of 72 hours for the hours, minutes, seconds and moon phases. The red gold openworked rotor has been customised for Gimbutis with black PVD inserts, which can be seen through the sapphire crystal caseback.
