Speake-Marin Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary With The Ripples Anniversary Edition
A Champagne yellow dial for Speake-Marin's luxury sports watch in honour of the past two decades.
Originally founded in 2002, Speake-Marin is celebrating 20 years of watchmaking this year and does so by presenting a special edition of its Ripples watch, aptly named the Ripples Anniversary Edition. This surprising luxury sports watch with an integrated design, the ever-popular category of watches, was launched earlier this year. Pairing Speake-Marin’s signature style with a newly designed case and a very distinctive design, this isn’t easily compared to any other stainless steel sports watch. Which is a very good thing! To mark the 20th anniversary, the dark grey dial is exchanged for a much more vibrant champagne-yellow gold one!
The Ripples comes in a rather surprising rounded square case which measures 40mm across. The right-hand side of the case protrudes outward to embrace the knurled and signed crown. The bezel lays on top of the central caseband and has a polished bevel. The top surfaces for the case are brushed, with polished sections all around providing a nice contrast. A sapphire crystal covers the front, with a second one covering the back. The raised and polished centre link connects the case to the bracelet.
Changing only the tone of the dial wasn’t enough for Speake-Marin, as in fact it is made of solid gold. The champagne-yellow hue of the dial is enhanced with the horizontal stripes, or ripples, giving the watch its name. This pattern is formed with a series of deep and rounded grooves. The central spade-and-whip hands, a Speake-Marin signature, indicate the hours and minutes. The small seconds subdial is unconventionally positioned in the upper right corner and breaks the rippled pattern. The applied indices around the dial are polished for a touch of contrast. The dial is also signed with 2002/2022 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Speake-Marin brand.
The movement is Speake-Marin’s proprietary SMA03-T20 calibre, which differs slightly from the one found in the Ripples when it was launched earlier this year, but only in terms of finishing. Developed with Le Cercle des Horlogers, this automatic movement is powered by a micro-rotor and uses 135 components. With 31 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph, it offers 52 hours of power reserve. Seen through the caseback, the SMA03-T20 has traditional types of finishing with Côtes de Genève, hand-bevelled edges and more. The bead-blasted, circular satin-finished, chamfered and rhodium-plated micro-rotor reveals a special decoration to set it apart from the normal Ripples.
The Speake-Marin Ripples Anniversary Edition comes on the same integrated three-link stainless steel bracelet as its inaugural predecessor. It is presented as a limited edition of 50 pieces and will cost you USD 34,900. Considering the fact it’s a steel sports watch, and the roughly 20k price tag of the normal edition, that’s quite the markup from Speake-Marin!
