Vietnamese lacquer meets mother-of-pearl and Swiss mechanics in three hand-made dials.
Awake has built a clear identity around thoughtful materials and craft, moving from early eco-focused projects to last year’s Son Mai lineup, watches that brought traditional Hanoi lacquer work and silver-leaf dials into a permanent, Swiss-powered collection. The Fragments series is the next chapter: three limited editions that fuse Vietnamese Son Mai lacquer with mother-of-pearl in a contemporary take on Japan’s Raden inlay, all on Awake’s compact platform with the La Joux-Perret movement.
The recycled 316L steel case of the new Fragments Editions maintains the Son Mai dimensions: 39mm in diameter, 10.9mm thick without the crystal (11.8mm with), and 45.6mm lug-to-lug. Lines are clean and neutral to frame the dial; an AR-coated sapphire crystal sits atop, with a screw-down sapphire back. Water-resistance is 50m, appropriate for daily wear. The mid-case finishing is deliberately quiet; the case is a stage for the dial.
Each dial is a hand-laid mosaic of nacre fragments fixed under successive layers of natural lacquer (from the sap of Vietnam-native Rhus verniciflua trees), then lightly toned with organic pigments. The result is genuine depth and variance piece-to-piece, shifts from matte to iridescence as light moves across the surface. Three colours set the mood: Green (forest light), Blue (ocean depth), Pink (twilight shimmer). Faceted applied indices and hands carry BGW9 lume in Awake’s “coiffe” signature, giving a soft, controlled glow that hovers over the texture without flooding it.
The series is powered by La Joux-Perret’s G101, a 28,800 vibrations/hour automatic movement with a 68-hour power reserve. Through the back, you’ll see a custom tungsten rotor with alternating micro-bead planes, brushed and polished, signed “La Joux-Perret pour Awake.”
Awake partners with Maison Jean Rousseau for a matte-black calfskin strap, lined in Alcantara, in colours that echo each dial. Quick-release bars make swaps easy; the pin buckle is made from recycled steel.
