The MeisterSinger Pangaea Day Date 365, now with a Grey Dial

The single-hand calendar watch combines its vintage lettering with a modern dial colour.

While primarily known for its minimalistic watch displaying the time thanks to a single hand (which is used to display the hours mainly, and a deliberately vague indication of the minutes), MeisterSinger is no stranger to additional complications, in particular astronomical and calendar features – admitidely, a great match with slightly old-school and poetical single-hand display. One of the most classic watches in the brand’s portfolio, the Pangaea is best expressed in its day-date version, with the Pangaea Day Date 365 edition being probably the most attractive of them all. Good news is that the latter returns in a new, slightly more contemporary grey edition.

Since 2001, MeisterSinger, a German company with Swiss-made timepieces, has made a name for itself by manufacturing unique, single-hand mechanical watches. MeisterSinger watches show the time without any of the frenetic minute and second hands of conventional timekeepers and encourage a relaxed approach to time in a fast-moving world. The finely designed tip of the single hand literally points to the current moment in time, with a precision that is to the closest 5-minute window – which is, in all fairness, precise enough for most daily situations. The single-hand display is also a node to the past, to an era when most of the tower and table clocks, as well as pocket watches, displayed the time by only using one hand.

With this in mind, the brand has created a sub-collection, or actually a style of dial, that echoes ancient times. Dubbed 365 and relying on antique-looking fonts, these editions have already existed on the time-only Pangaea, the Primatik and the Pangaea Day Date. However, up until now, the latter was exclusively available in a discreet and retro ivory edition. But it is now joined by an unprecedented model mixing old and new, replacing the ivory colour with a more modern grey dial and coloured accents.

What doesn’t change are the base specs, as this new edition of the MeisterSinger Pangaea Day Date 365 retains the classic 40mm stainless steel case of the collection, with a fairly slim profile of 10.5mm. The three-part case is entirely polished and comes equipped with a domed sapphire crystal, a see-through caseback secured by 6 screws and a rounded, slightly oversized crown. Water-resistance is rated at 50m, sufficient considering the rather elegant vocation of this watch.

What matters this year, as the brand teases us before its first appearance at Watches and Wonders Geneva, is a new dial colour. Gone is the ivory dial, say hello to a contemporary mid-grey dial with a sunray-brushed pattern, as well as orange accents on the markers. Yet, this grey Pangaea Day Date 365 still uses cursive fonts, the brand’s old logo and antique-looking numerals, together with a retro needle-like central hand for the time. The day-date complication is still using two recessed open rings rotating counterclockwise, which are here done in matte grey.

The exhibition caseback reveals the Sellita SW-220 automatic. This movement indicates the time through its central hand but also the day and date on two rotating discs. Both are set through the first position of the pull-out crown. Running at a rate of 28,800vph, it delivers a modest 38-hour power reserve. The central rotor is customised with the MeisterSinger signature and logo.

Available on a variety of straps and bracelets, the new MeisterSinger Pangaea Day Date 365 Grey is immediately available from the brand and its retailers, at EUR 2,590. For more details, please visit MeisterSinger.com.
