The Laco Scorpion Dive Watch Now In A More Compact 39mm Size

A new squad of midsize Scorpion dive watches that should easily accommodate most wrists.

Laco’s Scorpion watches (from the Squad/Sport collection) are a popular series of dive models with typically large 42mm cases, such as last year’s Edition 96 special edition. The rugged watch comes in four different variations, separated by accent colours and straps – Himalaya, Mojave, Amazonas and Atlantik. Based on customer feedback, the German watchmaker is now introducing smaller midsize models to accommodate just about any wrist size. At 39mm, the new collection should work for many buyers, but they’ll live side-by-side with the 42mm models for those who prefer larger dive watches. Here’s the rundown of the Laco Scorpion 39mm collection.

The case is 39mm in diameter and 13mm in height, so it’s notably smaller than the 42mm counterparts but still contemporary and versatile for most wrists. The unidirectional rotating bezel has a black ceramic insert with a Super-LumiNova 15-minute scale in white, green, blue or orange. The rest of the markings are white. These colours extend to the respective dials as well. A double-domed sapphire crystal protects the dial, while a guarded, signed screw-down crown ensures an impressive 300-metre water resistance rating. The solid case back features an embossed and polished scorpion over a textured matte background.

The dials are matte black with a familiar layout that’s identical to the 42mm variants. The double index at 12 o’clock and single counterpart at 6 o’clock have Super-LumiNova colours matching their bezel’s 15-minute scale. Otherwise, the dials are the same with bold white Arabic numerals and indexes at 3 and 9 o’clock. A date window with a matching black background sits at 3 o’clock. The minute hand shares the Super-LumiNova colour of the bezel and two indexes, as does the lollipop seconds hand. An exception is a model with all-white bezel markings, which has an orange minute hand and white seconds hand. The model names are based on these colours with Himalaya having the all-white bezel markings and orange minute hand, Mojave having the orange bezel markings and dial elements, Atlantik having blue and Amazonas having green. These names and colours are the same as the 42mm models.

Powering the new midsize Scorpions is the Laco 200 (found in most Laco watches), based on a Sellita SW200-1 automatic (Elaboré grade). It has 26 jewels, and beats at 28,800vph (4Hz) with a 38-hour power reserve. A reliable Swiss workhorse that will last a lifetime with periodic maintenance. Functions include central hours, minutes, hacking seconds and the date. The 42mm models also have these Elabore grade movements with an option to upgrade to Top grade, which should continue with the smaller series.

There are three 20mm strap options including two rubber straps and a steel bracelet. One rubber strap is black, while the other matches the bezel/dial colours (black on the all-white bezel variant). The rubber strap options retail for EUR 930, while the steel bracelet brings it up a bit to EUR 980. Not bad for such stylish and capable divers.
