The Cleaner Hanhart 415 ES Pure Chronograph

Sticking to a predominantly black-and-white palette, the neo-vintage 415 ES looks sharper and more technical.

Hanhart, the German brand with Swiss roots, produced stopwatches in the early 1920s, followed by Flieger chronographs for pilots in the late 1930s. Today, it is one of the go-to brands for retro pilot watches updated with contemporary materials and movements. At the end of last year, Hanhart released the 415 ES, a faithful recreation of a vintage chronograph from the mid-1960s. The latest vision for the 415 ES tones down the colour scheme for a more technical, sharper-looking chronograph.

When it was introduced in the mid-1960s, the 415 ES was Hanhart’s first chronograph with a bidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute graduations and the first to feature the new wing logo designed to modernise the brand’s image. Not to be confused with the 1954 ES 417 pilot’s chronograph, both models have ES in their name, a reference to Edelstahl, the German for steel.

The 39mm stainless steel case has a thickness of 13.5mm, a lug-to-lug of 46mm, retro pump-style pushers, a large, knurled winding crown and a sealed caseback to ensure the 100m depth rating. Highlighting the most salient feature of the original, the fluted bidirectional 60-click bezel has a matte black ceramic insert with engraved 60-minute markings and an inverted triangle at noon but no luminescence.

Where things differ is on the dial. Replacing the bold yellow Arabic numerals and markers and the bronze-coloured hands of the earlier reference, the new 415 ES Pure sticks to white numerals and hands against the matte black background, producing a sharper, cleaner look and enhanced legibility.

The white tachymeter scale and red 100-unit scale are maintained, as are the bent tips of the minutes and chronograph seconds hands. However, the luminescent material applied to the hour and minute hands and hour markers is now white with a green emission.

The 415 ES Pure keeps time with a reliable Sellita SW510 manual-winding movement (an alternative to the Valjoux 7750) with an extended power reserve of 58 hours. Available with black, dark brown or light brown calskin straps and a stainless steel pin buckle, the 415 ES Pure retails for EUR 2,390 (incl. tax). More information at hanhart.com.

  1. I like this model better but not quite there yet for me at least, even if I like the bezel which is quite reminiscent of Breguet Type 20 100th anniversary. I keep hoping that Hanhart will drop their handwound flyback chronograph in a slimmer version of their pioneer chronograph, I would love to have a tachytele handwound flyback in white with a slimmer case!

  2. How can you say they toned down the colour scheme for the new one when the 417ES initially came in black with white numerals only?

From my perspective, they’ve added a large black bezel and some red scales, thus making the colour scheme louder than the original 417ES. I have the 417ES Flyback reverse panda, which is still black and white, and still seems more quiet than this iteration.

I don’t mind this iteration one bit, but for the moment I’ll keep my clean and crisp reverse panda, thanks. If only because this numeral bezel in black darkens the entire watch. The original 417’s with the coin edge bezel somehow look friendlier, and they play with the light in a cool way.

  3. @Chris – you’re confusing two different watches here. In this article, we’re talking about the 415ES and not the 417ES. The 417ES features a fluted bezel with red marker and, yes, it did came first in classic black and white. However, the 415ES, which was released first last year, comes with a black graduated bezel and a rather colour-rich dial. These are two different watches.
