Round Two of the Albishorn Marinagraph Classic and Classic Fumé

Albishorn, an independent Swiss brand founded in 2024 by Sébastien Chaulmontet, focuses on “imaginary vintage” watches, “what if” models that are visually grounded in the past – but which never existed. A year after its debut, Albishorn released the Marinagraph, a robust skin diver with a patented 10-minute regatta countdown function that “could have” been on board Columbia, the American defender of the 1958 America’s Cup. Back for round two, Albishorn introduces two new versions of the Marinagraph with white or black decks.

Although the Marinagraph taps into the lore of the 1958 edition of the America’s Cup, it is firmly anchored to the brand’s debut watch, the imaginary 1930s Maxigraph regatta chronograph. The fictitious tool watch that “could have” accompanied Columbia’s crew is designed to meet the intense demands of pre-race timing. At its core is a 10-minute retrograde countdown function that disengages at zero, freezing the hand in place, while the main chronograph seconds hand keeps running. Activated with the red, ribbed anodised aluminium monopusher on the case at 9 o’clock – a nod to Columbia’s aluminium mast – the frozen countdown hand avoids potential visual confusion at the starting gun.

Sharing the same case specifications as the Maxigraph and earlier Marinagraphs – 39mm diameter x 13mm thickness x 47.7mm lug-to-lug – a distinctive feature is the “destro” layout with the aluminium monopusher on the left side of the case and the crown at 10 o’clock. The rationale behind the layout is that the thumb is the most efficient digit for activating a chronograph. The flared 42.7mm stainless steel bidirectional bezel sitting on top of the case, however, doesn’t feature the aluminium insert and tide bezel of the Marinagraph; instead, the new references have a black, domed sapphire crystal insert with luminescent markings. Still water-resistant to 100 metres, the caseback is sealed and decorated with the silhouette of a 12-foot yacht. Although the flared bezel hides most of the case, it is decorated with alternating brushed and polished finishes.

Available with a sunburst black (Classic) or a white lacquered dial with a gradient finish (Classic Fumé), the new references uphold the collection’s superior legibility. With no sub-dials to sully the deck, the 10-minute countdown indication is featured in a blue and red retrograde arc in the lower left quadrant of the dial. Sweeping backwards from 10 to zero, the decisive 5-minute sector is highlighted in red.

Unlike many chronographs with counters that chop off indices or invade peripheral tracks, all the applied markers of the Marinagraph are fully intact. Represented with triangles at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock and circles, the applied markers are enhanced with Super-LumiNova. The circular aperture at 3 o’clock is a running indicator; in blue and red for the white dial and white and blue for the black dial. Referencing the brand’s signature mountain emblem, the SLN-treated hour and minute hands have rhomboid-shaped tips, matching those inside the triangular markers. The black dial has a bright red central chronograph seconds hand with a luminescent retro-style lollipop counterweight, matching the countdown hands; the white version has blue hands.

The watches are powered by the proprietary calibre ALB01 A, an extensively modified and rotated Sellita-based (rooted in the traditional Valjoux 7750) automatic monopusher chronograph movement with a thickness of just 6.6mm and a robust power reserve of 64 hours.

Limited to 99 pieces per colour, the Marinagraph on a rubber strap (two included in the package) retails for CHF 3,950 (excl. tax) while the model on a steel bracelet (also supplied with two rubber straps) has a retail price of CHF 4,400 (excl. tax).
